I am hoping to find information on my great, great grandfather, John O'Leary.  He was born approximately 1851 in Midleton and emigrated to the U.S. around 1871.   He married in 1874 in Chicago and had a son (my great grandfather) named John Dennis O'Leary.  Any information would be most helpful.  I currently am residing in Co. Clare, Ireland, for the next couple of years.  I would love to learn more about my family roots.  Thank you kindly.

  • Mary,

You should write to the Parish office in St. Marys Road Midleton, Co. Cork. and see if they have his baptism details. You will not get a birth cert. for before 1864 when State Registration began in Ireland.

There are a number of John O'Leary'sand other O'Learys in the Midleton for nthat time. If you knw the Parents names it would make a great difference and easier to follow up.

  • Hi!  There is record of a John Leary marriage in St. John's, Newfoundland in 1799 to Catherine Allen, and John is listed as being from Middleton, Co. Cork.  I'm looking for information on John, and if he might be any connection to Timothy Leary (O'Leary) that came to Newfoundland in 1793/4.  Thank you!  :)

  • I have also posted a query about this person, John A. O'leary, who was born in Middleport. I am likely a cousin of yours. I have seen the year 1851 and on his death record in Chicago I have Jan. 26, 1901. John D. O'leary was likely the brother of my great-grandmother, Mary Catherine O'Leary born in 1875. Their mother was Deborah Dinan, daughter of John and MAry (Geary) Dinan. John was born in Ireland in 1831 and emigrated in 1836 with sister Mary and parents Patrick and Anne (Myers) Dinan. I have looked them up and I am positive the Dinans are from County Clare so if you want to find out about other ancestors you should look up Patrick, Anne, Mary, and John Dinan. Back to the O'Learys; My grandmother was the daughter of Mary Catherine O'Leary Montgomery McKeough (and some other last name). My grandmother and her two sisters were taken away from Mary and her husband, the girls' father, John Montgomery, for their alcohol abuse so she would not talk about them. My mom had to catch her unaware for her to reveal anything about the O'Leary side so I only have what I have gleaned from Chicago records and Illinoiis state records. I am somewhat sure of Middleton as his birthplace. I have other O'Leary names, John and Deborah's children, but they are at my house in Illinois, near Quincy. I am at our cabin in Northern Wisconsin but will be home in a week but have to drop off one son in Chicago so I will not get home until eight or nine o'clock, August 10. Hope you have email notifications on. My email is robertq@frontier,com. I was told DNA tests would help but this is three females backwards to John O'Leary so I do not think that will work to find relatives in Ireland.
