Hi; I dont know for certian the Given Name of our first Shaw Ancestor.   His Son is William Thomas Shaw, Born Jan 16 1834 in New Orleans Louisiana. I've checked the Arrivals in New Orleans between 1810 and 1834 and JOHN SHAW Born 1798 from Antrim appears to be a highly possible candidate he arrived on the ship Edward Downes about 1822 ,Alone. Can anyone help me find information on him or others with the Shaw Name before 1834?

    Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

It may be difficult to find information without a more specific place of origin in Antrim. Most Irish record sources- church records, land records, census records- are based on specific locations. Until you know a specific location within Ireland, preferably a parish or placename, it may be difficult to do anything more with these records.

I did find reference to two Shaws in the Flax Growers list. This was part of a government scheme to encourage the linen trade, free spinning wheels or looms were granted to individuals planting a certain area of land with flax. The lists of those entitled to the awards, covering almost 60,000 individuals, were published in 1796, and record only the names of the individuals and the civil parish in which they lived. Although there is no way of knowing if these Shaws are related to your Shaws it may give you a starting point for your search:

Remember to post any new information that you find heer, especially a place of origin. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.
