  • Eddie:

You can write to the GRO www.groireland.ie and request copies of the death records. You fill out their form, provide the quarter/year of death, registration district, volume and page number. Cost about 4 euros each. The informant will be shown on the death record.

  • Hi Eddie,

I am a descendant of Peter Butler and Ann Hand,  and have information on their arrivial in Australia and information on where and when Ann and Peter were married.   Whilst your post was made quite a few years ago, I am hoping you get back in touch, as I also have other information you requested on another post.

  • Hello Eddie,

I found the death records, not indexes, of three of the four Butler family members I believe you are looking for. The deaths were uncovered at the free irishgenealogy.ie website. The first death record is for Catherine Butler. She died at 11 Upper Mercer Street, Dublin City, on 21 January 1879. Her age at death was 5 months. Under the column for “Rank, Profession, or Occupation,” Catherine is described as the “Daughter of a Corn Porter,” which I believe refers to a person who worked on the docks unloading corn from a ship. Corn could also refer to grain.

The cause of death listed for Catherine is, “Bronchitis 6 Weeks Uncertified. No medical Attendant.” The person who reported the death to the local registrar was Anne Butler, Present at death. 11 Mercer Street.” I believe Anne Butler was Catherine’s mother.

The local Deputy Registrar, Henry J. Coulton, recorded Catherine’s death in the No. 3 South Dublin Registration District on 21 January 1879, which is the same day that Catherine died.

I’ve attached Catherine’s death record to this reply. Her death record is on Line No. 470 of the death register.

Next is the death record for Catherine’s mother Anne Butler. Anne died at 11 upper Mercer Street on 19 March 1880. At the time of death she was married, 41 years old, and the “Wife of a Labourer.” The cause of death was, “Consumption 2 weeks Uncertified. 6 Months Certified. 19-3-80.” The person who was present at the death was Peter Mercer of 11 Upper Mercer Street.

The Deputy Registrar, Henry J. Coulton recorded Anne’s death in the No. 3 South City Registration District, on 19 March 1880. Anne Butler’s death cert is attached to this reply. Anne Butler’s death record is on Line No. 464 of the death register.

The third death record is for James Butler. James died on 24 November 1881 in 11 Upper Mercer Street. At the time of death he was a 19 year old Bachelor whose occupation was, “Sorter in Post Office.” The cause of death was “Consumption 6 Months Uncertified. No medical Attendant.” The person who was present at the death was James’s sister Mary Butler, of 11 Upper Mercer Street. The Assistant Registrar, H J Coulton recorded the death in the 3 South City Registration District, Dublin, on 8 December 1881. James’s death record is also attached to this reply. James’s death record is on Line No. 438 of the death register.

As the above records show all three deaths took place at 11 Upper Mercer Street in Dublin, which means the three were family members.

A Google Map shows that Mercer Street Upper is just west of St Stephen’s Green, South Dublin City: https://is.gd/EOUxwQ

For a Google Street View of Mercer Street Upper, Dublin City, go to: https://is.gd/9pOW2G

At the present time the irishgenealogy.ie website does not have the full death record for Peter and Anne Butler’s daughter Anna. Full death records are only available from the year 1878, though there are indexes of deaths for all Ireland from 1864. If you want to obtain Anna’s death record, follow Roger McDonell’s advice in his reply to you, and order her death certificate from the General Register Office (GRO).
