I'm researching my family history and have got back to a Patrick Horan believed to be from Loughrea born 1837 who emigrated to England (don't have date) and married Brigit Burke (b Athenry 1841) in Sheffield Yorkshire 1859 - his father was also Patrick - appreciate it's a long shot but does anyone have any info/knowledge that might help me? thanks

Hi,
Thank you for your message.
Have you tried looking in church records in Loughrea for more information? Catholic records there start as early as 1827.
You should be able to find Patrick?s birth record here which would help confirm place of origin and also give you his parents? names. Most Catholic records are held locally so you could try writing to the local parish priest for possible assistance. Or the East Galway Family History Society should have copies of some of the records. Here is their email: galwayroots@eircom.net
Most surviving Church of Ireland records are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. Here are their websites: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ and http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42
Lists of these surviving registers can also be found at the National Library of Ireland.
You could also check for record of the family in the land acts pertaining to Ireland in the 19th century. There are two:
The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1838) found at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp
and Griffith?s Valuation (1848-1864) found at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/
Civil registration began in Ireland in 1864 so any births, deaths or marriages in the family after this date would be recorded in these records. Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is their website:

You can search the indexes to these records online at:

Have you tried looking in the 1901/1911 census records to see if there were any Horan?s still in the area at teh time? http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/
Some other websites that you may find useful are:
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx
The National Archives UK ? genealogy search: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/

I hope that some of this is helpful. Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.
Kind regards,
