Hi
There are 91 matches for a baptism/birth of Roderick Ryan on Roots Ireland, I assume that if he emigrated in 1871 the first few records listed will apply so you can ignore the others (this is a guess though - he may have emigrated as a child not an adult). However given that you only have a little bit of info it would be difficult to decide which Roderick if any are your ancestors. Its a subscription site so you will have to pay a few bob to subscribe and view the details. It would be a pity to spend money on this at this stage but if this is absolutely all the info you have this could be a good avenue to go down.
Good luck

Thanks so much mrs doyle. After sending my message i was then lucky enough to find my great grandfather in the Mormon 's database! turns out he was bornin 1865 and emigrated in 1868, ending up in Philadelphia for the 1910 census. does that narrow down which roderick on the irish end?

Dear Jospeh
That info narrows it down to 14 Roderick's born/baptised between 1860 and 1870 all of them in Co. Tipperary, so no harm having a look given there are so few, something might jump out at you as relevant - www.rootsireland.ie
