Looking for help finding my Irish ancestors. Joseph Nixon and Ellen Larkin m.1864. They had children, Thomas b.10 aug 1869 and Joseph b.18 mar 1866. Don't know any more about them other than joseph (senior) was a farmer or farm labourer. Thomas married Agnes meek 12 july 1892 and had children, Mary, Ellen, John, Elizabeth and Joseph. They moved to Scotland. Don't know what happened to Joseph. Not completely sure but think that Agnes meek was daughter of John meek and Mary kernohan. Would like to know anything at all about any of those mentioned. I know Agnes was born 27 jan 1874 in ballymena and died in Glasgow 23 July 1955. Thomas died in Glasgow 19 aug 1946. Would really like to find out more about Joseph and Ellen. Any info most welcome.

I found a 1901 census record for a Joseph and Ellen Nixon in Galgorm. They were listed as age 79 which means they were older when they were married in 1864. A granddaughter with the surname Logan was living with them which means that Joseph and Ellen had a daughter in addition to Thomas and Joseph.

I did find that census entry, however, not being able to know for sure it was definitely the family I was looking for I dismissed it. I could not see Ellen giving birth at the age of 47. Not saying it was not possible just not likely. Thanks for your help.

Ages in the 1901 census can sometimes be way off for various reasons. Since I did not see Joseph and Ellen in the 1911 census, I made the assumption that they both died somewhere bewteen 1901 and early 1911. I checked a subscription site and found death index records for both a Joseph Nixon and an Ellen Nixon in the Ballymena registration district which would be the registration district for Galgorm. There is no guarantee that these two are your ancestors but I think these records are worth checking. The ages shown in the index records were likely provided by the informant when the two Nixons died. However, they would indicate that they were much younger than 79 in 1901. If you want to get a copy of the death records, you need to contact the GRO www.groireland.ie
Fill out their form, provide the registration district (Ballymena), quater/year of death and the volume and page number.

I also found a birth index record for an Agnes Meek in 1874 in the Ballymena registration district Possibly this is the Agnes Meek who married Thomas Nixon.

If you obtain a copy of Agnes' Scottish death certificate, that should contain both her parents names.

Do you know that sometimes it just takes someone to tell you what to do. For some strange reason it had never occurred to me. Thanks, hopefully this will give me new leads.

I am glad you stated the obvious. I have looked up the Scottish death certificate for Agnes Nixon ( nee Meek). Her parents were John meek and Mary kernohan. They were living in the lisnafillon ahoghill area and children Mary, Henry, Thomas, and grandchildren Elizabeth, Annie and John. Thanks for your help.

A few years on and still looking for Joseph Nixon and Ellen Larkin who married in Ahoghill in 1864. Although I have found a couple on the 1901 census I can't be sure it's them. From checking as much as I can, it would appear they definitely didn't have a daughter which would quite possibly suggest that the couple on the 1901 census is not them. They had a son Joseph born 1866, I cannot find any trace of him other than his birth. Can anyone suggest the next step for me to take.

What was Joseph’s occupation on the 1864 marriage certificate? What was his townland? Have you looked in the revaluation records for that townland to see if you can trace him there?
I looked in the birth records for children born to Nixon and Larkin/Larken in Ballymena and found a third child a male born 11.5.1865 (no name). You can view that certificate on the GRONI site.
Have you looked at the 1907 death cert for Joseph Larkin to see if the marital status, occupation and other information matches that of the man who married in 1864. Likewise for the Ellen who died in 1910?
