  • Hi Old Mate,

I've been asked to have a look for your Hamiltons on Achill.

Can you give me some more info please - do you have any first names?

Are you looking for 1800's or more recent?

Do you have any Achill place names?

Do you know if they were Protestant or RC?
    Cheers

    Col

  • Hi Col,

Thank you for your reply. I'm trying to find information on a Joseph & Letitia Hamilton, they left Ierland about 1857 for Australia.

    Kind regards,

    Wayne (Oldmate)

  • Hi Wayne,

I've had a bit of a dig and found that a few others had already found your Hamiltons.

Some family trees on ancestry have:

Joseph Hamilton born 14 Sep 1817 Turlogh (6 K n.east of Castlebar in Mayo)

Died 19 Sep 1882 Rockvale, Armidale NSW

Married Letitia Molloy 10 Nov 1838 Turlogh

Letitia born 1822 Ire Died 3 Feb 1903 Rockvale

(google Joseph Hamilton married Letitia Molloy 10 November 1838 and click on first link; click on group sheet for birthdates of children)

Joseph and Letitia and seven children arrived in Sydney or Newcastle on the Aloe in 1857 (google assisted immigrants NSW)

Children Eliza  William  David  Robert  Mary Ann  Martha J  Joseph

The first four children were born in Turlough while the next three were born in Achill

There were  two more children: Lietitia and Margaret born in Armidale NSW

My ancestors are from Achill too; it's a beautiful place and well worth the drive out to look.

    Cheers

There are four Joseph Hamiltons in Achill listed in Griffiths Valuation which was done in Achill in 1855.

I don't know whether it's the same one and he ownde four properties but they are close to each other:

There is one in Dugort, one in Dugort East, one in Keel and one in Slievemore.

    Cheers

  • Hi Wayne,

I'm attachinga copy of a printout from Ancestry.

There is a pic of Joseph and a contact person (through ancestry)

You can usually access ancestry at your local library or Family History Centre

I couldn't find any record of Hamitons in Turlogh graveyards.

You might want to try this angle yourself.

You could also try the Government Records Office in Dublin when you visit and check the Hamilton deaths in Turlogh.

ON IGI there are a lot of Hamiltons in Drumreagh which is near Turlogh I think.

If you google Ireland white pages you might find a few Hamiltons to write to enquiring whether they are connected or whether they know any info on Jo's parents William and Margaret.

From the searches I made, the Turlogh records for BDM only start at 1847.
