Neil/Neill and Noonan.
I would like to correctly establish the parents Birth, Death and/or Marriage details of my G/G/Grandmother, Catherine Neil (Neill) and whether she had siblings. I would also like to establish her birth details in Cork.
Death Certificate
On her death certificate, (details provided by her son) she is identified as Catherine Neil, died Bathurst, NSW on 23 Sept 1919, aged 83 years and in Australia for 64 years. Her father is named as John Neil, a coppersmith and her mother as Ellen Noonan. Her place of birth is notated as Evergreen, County Cork, Ireland and year of birth therefore assumed to be 1836 or 1837..
Passenger List
Shipping details for the Orphan ship, 'Lady Kennaway' which departed Plymouth, England in Aug 1854 arriving Sydney, NSW on 9 Dec 1854 lists;
Catherine Neill, aged 18 years, a kitchenhand from City of Cork, parents John and Ellen, both dead, a Roman Catholic with no relatives in Australia.
Please Note: There were a number of young ladies named Catherine Neil or Neill on vessels to Australia in this year range but the one mentioned here seems the most likely since some of the information matches her information on her death certificate such as parents christian names.
Marriage
Catherine Neil married Friedrich Ludwig Anthes from Frankfurt, Germany in Sydney, NSW in 1857.
It is assumed that Catherine Neil may have been orphaned between her birth around 1836 and before departing Ireland in 1854, maybe during the potato famine? Regarding her death certificate reference to Evergreen, is there a town called Evergreen or could this be a reference to where she spent time in a poorhouse/workhouse in Cork City (Evergreen Street/Road ). Perhaps she, along with other young orphan ladies from those establishments, was shipped from Cobh to Plymouth prior to journeying to Australia per 'Lady Kennaway'.
Tks,
Kevin.
