My husband's great grandfather, John Humphrey was born in County Cork in 1865 to Thomas Humphrey & Mary Green.
He arrived in NYC in the early 1880s (1882-1884?), and according to family stories, he may have come over as some sort of "indentured servant".
Unfortunately I do not have any other information regarding John or his family's time in Ireland, but any leads or information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

Hi
Thank you for your message.
Due to the high cost of travel, it was quite common for people to emmigrate under various schemes by which they spent a set ammount of time in the new country as an 'indentured servant'. Do you know much about John's emigration? The dates, the reason why he left, who he may have travelled with?..etc..Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at (e.g. Liverpool, New York, etc.), this could be a good place to find more information.
From October 1831 through October 1921, the Boston Pilot newspaper printed a ?Missing Friends? column with advertisements from people looking for ?lost? friends and relatives who had emigrated from Ireland to the United States. This extraordinary collection of 40,743 records is available here as a searchable online database, which contains a text record for each ad that appeared in the Pilot. http://infowanted.bc.edu/ This may be a good resource to check for information.
