I believe John Finnigan was born in Loughgall (shown as Luggall in army papers) in about March 1818. He joined the Royal Artillery on 6 July 1836 in Belfast. By the 1851 census, after spending time in China with the RA, he was married and living in Brighton, Sussex, England. He was discharged from RA 24 November 1856.
John's son George married Elizabeth Wymer (from Norfolk) in 1879 in Brighton. George's son Stanley - my grandfather - married Mabel Maeers in 1915 in Streatham, Surrey. Stanley's son Norman - my father - married Pauline Sturge in 1948 in Palmers Green, Middlesex.
We moved to Australia in 1962 and I have lived here ever since.
Apart from John's army discharge papers I know next to nothing about his early life. I don't know when John left Ireland or when he married - his wife's first name was Elizabeth. I believe John's father's name was William.
Any help or research suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Obviously due to my location in Australia online resources are most suitable. Thanks.
David Finnigan
