I will be in Mayo in September 2013 and I am looking for relatives.  My gg grandfather Edward L Walsh (1810) left Killala in 1840 to come to New York.  His wife, Mary Omalley was from the same area. They had 6 children, some born in Ireland and some born in New York.  If anyone know anything about this family, I would greatly appreciate any information

  • Hi Candy,

Thank you very much for your message.

I have forwarded it to one of our volunteers who hopefully may be able to assist or advise you.

In the meantime, we have added a new link to the top of our website for people who are planning on visiting in 2013. It takes you to a short web form. We would really appreciate it if you could take a moment to complete this. Thank you!

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Candy,

I have a lot of ancestors from around Killala, so I can help you out.  First off, when planning your trip to Mayo, if you are interested in doing some history research, here are some places you should visit:

The Jackie Clarke collection is something that I really want to visit, and it is an amazing story:

The Mayo Library has a lot of resources, and the folks there extremely helpful. You might already want to take a look for info already:

I didn't see any Walshes listed on the Tithes for Killala, but there are a lot in Kilfian Parish (I am a parish liason there). You can take a look here:

    http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/results.jsp?surname=walsh&firstname=&county=Mayo&parish=kilfian&townland=&search=Search

There are also a lot of Walshes in Kilcummin (just north of Killala) here:

    http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/results.jsp?surname=walsh&firstname=&county=&parish=kilcummin&townland=&search=Search

Note that they show the county as Kerry, but most of the records are from Mayo, there is some bug in the system.

Generally, Killala was used as the registration district, so it is quite likely that your Walshes could have been from the surrounding areas.

I did see a number of Walshes here: http://www.kilfiancrosskin.com/ and some Malleys as well.

I'll do some more looking around, but feel free ask questions!

  • Hi Candy ~ Not sure if you are still researching or checking messages. I too have Walsh ancestry from Killala. My forebears also emigrated early 1800s to New York. Interested to compare notes. Regards ~ MS
