Thomas McCarthy was possibly born in 1794. His wife, Ellen Higgins was born in1820. Both were from County Cork..possibly in Cove of Cork. Their son was Jeremiah McCarthy, born about 1839 -  he married Margaret O'Hara , born in Limerick . Both came to Canada..in the "1840s"

.Any help or direction or confirmation would be appreciated..

Thanks so much.

  • Hi,

Thank you very much for your message.

You could try confirming Cobh as place of origin using church records. If you could find Jeremiah?s birth record or his parents birth/marriage records in the local parish records it would be the confirmation that you need.

Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. It also shows you where copies of the records are available. For Cobh parish, follow this link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Cork%20East&parish=Cobh&churchid=36

As you can see from the above link there are copies of Cobh?s records available from Mallow Heritage Centre. If you would like to contact them here is their email, however please note that a fee may apply:

Also, Irish Genealogy have uploaded Catholic records from the Diocese of Cork and Ross to their website free of charge. Unfortunately, Cobh is not part o that Diocese. However it may be worth your while doing a search on the website in case the family were from another part of Cork. You can search the website here:

Some other websites where you could try searching are:

www.familysearch.org has a huge database of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland.

www.rootsireland.ie have a large collection of Irish Church records, however you have to pay to use this site.

Some other websites that you may find helpful are:

The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

    Kind regards,
