my husband and i recently visited Ballylaneen. we know his gr grandfather, John Gough, was born in Stradbally on June 24, 1849. we learned from several people in Whelan's that Goughs had lived in Stradbally up until recent years. we were directed to the catholic church yard where Goughs are buried.

John's parents were Edward Gough and Mary Donnell married in Ballylaneen in 1822.

st. ann's dates to 1824.  was there an older church?

any help would be appreciated. thank you.

  • Hi Patsy,

Thank you very much for your message.

You could try contacting the local parish priest to see if he can be of possible assistance. Here is a link to the parish contact page:

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

    Kind regards,

  • Yes there was an older church in Ballylaneen. The predecessor of St Anne's was situated in the middle of the old graveyard (where Tadhg Gaelach is buried). There's no definite ruin left as the church fell into disuse when St Anne's opened nearly two centuries ago. Nevertheless, there is a raised stoney area in the centre of the graveyard which is probably the remains of the ruin.

The parish records for Ballylaneen and Stradbally go back as far as 1795. I'm not sure if the books are still available to the public. They may have been taken away for safe keeping. I photographed all the pages of several of them many years ago. The one you'd want is attached (cover only). Fr Condon might know more.

  • hello, aidan---

thank you for the information.  i think i am reading on the photo that the book you copied w/photographs is from Sept 1809 to 1863.

is it possible for you to look at the photos for the years 1828 thru 1850 for entries for Edward and Mary Gough; their sons Thomas, b. 1830; Michael b. 1840; Patrick b. 1842 and John b. 1849?

thanks for friending me on facebook!  my husband and i are planning a trip to stradbally and ballylaneen this coming May.  i will be in touch closer to the dates.  i think we need to have a pint in Mooney's An Rinn, don't you? ;)

also....any insight on how easy it might be to just knock on the rectory door and speak to Fr Condon unannounced?  we shied out of doing that last May when we were in the village.  i have written him 2X since with no answers.

    thanks for your help!

  • Hi Pat.

The six books that I photographed were:

    Baptisms 1850-1863

    Baptisms 1863-1882

    Baptisms 1883-1919

    Marriages 1805-1840

    Marriages 1840-1863

    Marriages 1863-1962

I previously did certainly see an earlier book(s) going back as far as the 1790s, but I wasn't geared up for photographing at the time. When I eventually did bring the camera around 2007, the earlier book(s) was/were not there.

As you can see from dates of the books above, I won't be able to find the births of Thomas, Patrick and John Gough, since they were baptised before 1850. But the marriage of their parents Edward and Mary would undoubtedly have been shortly before 1830, the date of the birth of the first child.

After a bit of looking, I found an entry for 10th February 1828 for Edward Gough and Mary Barett(?), with an Edward Gough as witness. That's probably it, I suppose. I've uploaded it here. It's the second entry from the top, on the page on the right. Hope it transmits to you. If not I can send it via Facebook

A pint in Mooneys would be very nice, and I do get down there occasionally, although I live in Cork.
