I am looking for an Ellen Carew age 26 when she arrived in Sydney on the vessel SIMONDS
on 12 April 1855, Botany Bay (departed 13 Jan, Liverpool). She listed herself as a farm servant. From Cahir, Tipperary. Could not read or write. She indicated that her parents were Thomas and Mary.
However, family anecdotes state that she was the daughter of Lord and Lady Carew who wanted her to marry a cousin (a Roman Catholic, for lineage purposes) but Ellen wanted to marry a Methodist and ran away to Australia in the company of her maid. There, she married a William Creber with two of their offspring ending up in Tonga.
Can anyone provide links to the Ellen Carew that I am researching?

Hello Gary,
Most of the church records are between two sites. www.rootsireland.ie and www.irishgenealogy.ie
I went to rootsireland and found 3 baptismal records for Ellen Carew whose father is Thomas Carew.
These records are between 1824 - 1834. They are listed on the Co.Waterford heritage site. You will have to go online yourself to view these records. They are about €5 each or cheaper if you buy in bulk.
You will find that many co tipperary parishes are listed on the co waterford site, as parishe boundaries are not the same as civil boundaries. I found one record is listed for Ardfinnan which is only about 5 miles from Cahir. On port of arrival people often listed the nearest large town as their last place of residence.
Anyway It's all worth a look,
Hope this helps a little, and keep an open mind regarding dates!!!

Hi Gary,
My Father thinks he might be linked to Ellen Carew and the story you have mentioned. He had been trying to trace the history back himself. I don't know much about it but he has a folder on it all. We are from a Tongan blood line now living in New Zealand.

Hi Chris
We are related. I have details of the Brahne family in Tonga (visited there a couple of months ago) as my mother, Mary Lily Primrose Sexton, was born in Queen Salote's palace. My grandmother was Ana Luise Brahne born in Ha'afeva, Ha'apai, Tonga. My problem in finding Ellen Carew has been in trying to personally link her to when she left Ireland and from where.
Someone from the Brahne family apparently visited the Carews a few years back but I haven't been able to make contact with them.
I will try to contact you through another process
Cheers

Hi Tom
Thanks for the offer. However, things haven't progressed much lately. I still have only the details of Ellen's parents being Thomas and Mary and haven't found any passenger list details of her leaving Ireland. I do have Australian details of the man she married (William Creber, a seaman) in Australia who would have worked for the Carews (?) in Ireland. There is the possibility that one of Alice O'Callaghan from Cahir, Catherine Condon, and Margaret O'Brien from Ballyporeen may have also worked for the Carews as they were also passengers on the SIMONDS and Ellen's maid was supposed to have travelled with her.

Hi Gary, further to Chris's post recently, my husband William (Bill) Brahne has been tracing Ellen Carew for many years. We have a copy of her Death Certificate which I can email to you. We have also obtained her Marriage Certificate to William Creber and some of her children's birth certificates - all trying to find details of her parents in Ireland. We have also got a copy of a Birth Record for Ellen Carew around the time we think she was born and that shows her father as Edmond Carew and Mother Judith Morrissey. We have drawn a blank from there! Sorry for sketchy details, but I don't have our folder with me at the moment.

Ellen Carew may have lied to officials when she arrived at New South Wales, Australia. She may have bee aged 16 not 26 (b. 1839?) and her father may have been Edward (or Edmund?), not Thomas.

Hi Tom Many thanks for your efforts. I hope you are getting some satisfaction from your fantastic endeavours. The info received so far is going some way to help me understand the problems in locating Irish ancestral files. I am still a little confused as to the county/town/parish, etc.structure, but I am learning. We have been looking for links to Ellen Carew, which appears to be the name given when this lady (young lady?)arrived in Sydney. We have been hard-pressed to find links to her approximate date of birth as she gave her age as 26. However, her death certificate indicates she may have been only 16yo. Her husband at the time of her death, appears to still be illiterate as he could only make his mark instead of signing this document. He seems to have indicated that Ellen's father's name was EDWARD and the surname being a little indistinct due to the writing used. I am attaching a copy of the death certificate, supplied to me by Sandra Brahne. The surname of Ellen's father could be any number of combinations, but appears to end in "*eary" (???). Do you have any suggestions?
Cheers

Hi Tom
Thanks for the continued work. However, I think you have finger-trouble as your last tx attachment was only a doc regarding the changes to the national library setup next year.
I am looking forward to the original baptism record.

Hello, I know its been years but. I am trying to do some family history work on the Brahne's family. Things seem to have gotten lost in translation for us. But, we recently got in touch with a family member Brahne's living in NZ a few years ago that told us this story. I have been searching some of the names you guys mentioned and could it be that Ellen's father went by Tipperary? My line comes from Otto Ernest Brahne. I would also love if anyone still has a copy of Ellen's Death cert to try and do some more research. :)
Thank you,
Ana
