Greetings Kildorrery, from Queensland Australia. My early ancestors were from Kildorrery, specifically around Oldcastletown, Gortacurrig, Ballyvisteen, Glasvanta and Springvale. My great-great grandparents were Timothy Noonan (circa 1822) and Catherine Maume (circa 1823). They had nine children: James (1844); Bridget (1847); Margaret (1849), John (1851), Timothy (1852), Johanna (1855), Catherine (1857), Mary (1861), Elizabeth (1865). At least 6 of them came to Australia in the mid-late 1800s and lived fairly close to each other in inner-urban Melbourne. Margaret, and possibly John and Timothy, stayed behind. I wonder if there are relatives of this family still in the Kildorrery area I might make contact with. Aside from that, I'm happy to chat with anyone who's interested in this early period of Kildorrery history. Best wishes. MarieC

Hi Marie
Greetings from Kildorrery
There are Maumes in Gortacurrig Kildorrery, descendants of Thomas or Tomas Maume. Jack Maume who died age 89 in 2003 gave a detailed account of Tomas's family but as yet I can't find any link with your Catherine. It is possible that she is a descendant of a brother of Tomas. The information you gave ties in with the Kildorrery Church records. I'm sure there has to be a connection so I will keep looking. If you have any more information like family stories that might provide a link let me know. Jack Maume was a poet and a storyteller and a book of his poems was published in 2004 which depict much of life in Kildorrery in his young days. Many years ago Jack had a visit from a relation in Australia who was also called Jack Maume.
I will contact you if I find anything of relevance.
Best wishes

Hi Brenda
Thanks so much for your reply. It's great to make contact with someone in our ancestral home of Kildorrery! I have your Jack Maume, son of Thomas Maume, in my tree. I think Jack's grandparents may have been John Maume and Ellen Coughlan, and his great grandparents Thomas Maume and Elizabeth Gallagher. I agree with you that we are not descended from Jack's direct line but I think Jack may have been a distant cousin to us.
I think it may have been John Maume, (likely) brother of Jack's great grandfather Thomas, that we are descended from. This early John Maume (b. ca. 1795) married Bridget Noonan in Kildorrery in 1816 and a Thomas Maume was a witness to that marriage. I think our Catherine Maume (b. ca. 1823) may be John and Bridget's daughter (though I can't find any baptism records for this family). Catherine married Timothy Noonan in 1841 in Kildorrery; and her (likely) brother Denis Maume married Mary Noonan in Kildorrery in 1847. These may have been cousin marriages of some degree. All of this is a bit speculative though, based on the parish records remaining, but it seems to fit together with other records such as Tithes and Griffiths Land Valuation.
Until I started my records search, no-one in my family knew where in County Cork our ancestors were from, so there aren't any stories I can tell you from early on. I have more information from this end though, for anyone who might be interested. One branch of the Maume descendants (including my own) ended up in inner-urban Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. I have found records for another branch that settled in Nudgee, Queensland, Australia (now a suburb of Brisbane). These Nudgee relatives appear to have been descendants of a different Catherine Maume who married James Magner in Kildorrery in 1844. I think she may have been a daughter of Jack's great grandfather Thomas Maume. Her daughter Margaret Magner married into a Fitzgibbon family in Australia. I think the Fitzgibbons may have been from Kildorrery too.
I'm sure this is more than enough genealogy from me for now! I'm happy to be enlightened if I have connected up the dots incorrectly, and I'm happy to share whatever I have found with others. Mainly I joined this site to 'touch base' with the ancestral homeland and am delighted to have received a reply.
Cheers!

I have written a blog piece about the Noonans of Kildorrery here. I'm posting this link for future visitors who may be researching or interested in this family. Cheers, Marie

Hi Marie
Thank you so much for sharing your research with us. It may well be very useful to other people seeking their relatives. I posted it on the history page on the Kildorrery site so it may get wider viewing. You spoke in your blog about the famine times. Jack Maume told me that his grandmother or great grandmother (not sure which) died of famine fever. She caught the fever when visiting somebody else who was sick. She lived in the house Jack was subsequently born in. When she got sick they had to block off the door to her room from the rest of the house and break a separate entrance in from the outside. Just thought you might like that bit of information. Also on another note somebody with the same name (Jack Maume) visited Jack from Australia sometime before he died. Do you have any idea who that might be?
Slan go foill (goodbye for a while)

Hi Brenda
Thanks so much for posting the piece on your History page. I wonder if you would mind linking to christieancestors.blogspot.com, where researchers can download source records and more. The formatting of the piece has become a little scrambled in the reprint on your site. It's ok though, the information is all there.
Cheers!

p.s. Yes I think it was Elizabeth Gallagher (married name Maume, your Jack's great grandmother), who died of famine fever. I read about it on another blog. She was related to us by marriage I believe. Terrible story. Also, I don't know of a Jack Maume in Australia or New Zealand. It would be interesting to connect. We would be very distantly related too but going a lot generations back now.

Hi Marie
Would you mind contacting me at kildorrery@irelandxo.com so that I can email you directly. I have records of the Maume baptisms. The Kildorrery records start in 1824 which means Catherine's would not be included but you may be interested in the other ones.
