My Great- Grand Father JOHN JOSEPH DALY was born about 1854 to TOM DALY  and LUCY KILLEEN who are buried in the Kilmurry Ibrickan Cemetary. I am trying to find out his birth details and his emigration details to either Australia or New Zealand.  Also, If anyone can tell me anything about his parents it would be awesome. Thanks.

  • Hi Vivian,

Thank you very much for your message. I hope that someone with information on the family makes a connection with you.

In the meantime, have you tried looking in local parish records for his birth details?Civil registration did not begin in Ireland until 1864 so all births etc were recorded by the church prior to this.

Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. It also shows you where copies of the records are available. For Kilmurry Ibrickan parish, follow this link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Clare&parish=Kilmurry-Ibricken&churchid=785

Civil registration began in Ireland in 1864 so any births, deaths or marriages in the family after this date would be recorded in these records. Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is their website:

    http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

You can search the indexes to these records up to 1958 online at:

    https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347

You could also try looking for record of his parents in the land records pertaining to Ireland in the 19th century.  There are two:

The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1838) found at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp

    and Griffith?s Valuation (1848-1864) found at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

For information on his emigration, more information was generally given at the port of arrival so it may be an idea to look there. The University of Woolongong has produced, on microfiche, a complete index and transcript of all information concerning immigrants of Irish origin recorded on ships' passenger lists between 1848 and 1867 for New South Wales. These are useful for finding out an exact place of origin as well as parents' names. The Public Record Office of Victoria has good online databases of settlers at www.prov.vic.gov.au Otherwise, other records may be found in the Colonial Office Papers of the UK National Archives, class reference CO 201. This class contains a wide variety of records, including petitions for assisted passages, emigrants' lists, records of emigrants on board ship, petitions from settlers for financial assistance and much more.

Here are some other websites that you may find useful:

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

  • Ask John Daly of Clonmore Lodge. He lives beside the cemetary of Kilmurry Ibricken and is a local expert on it.

He runs a bb and you will find him online. I suggest you write him a line as this is probably busy season for him.

  • Hi Vivian

John Joseph Daly is also my great grandfather and I live in Auckland, New Zealand. I am descended from his youngest son Bernard Francis Daly who is my grandfather.  Which one of John Joseph Daly's children are you descended from?  He had 11 children but 1 died in infancy.  Over the years there have been Daly family reunions held in Auckland, if you have attended any of them, we most probably have already met.

In regards to John Joseph's parents, Thomas (Tom) and Lucy nee Killeen, we only know a little about them through research done back in 1995.  We don't know who their parents were but we do know they owned a farm in Rineroe, Quilty, C.Clare, which is still presently in the family owned by a Daly descendent.  My cousin visted them In Ireland in September 2013 and said they are really lovely people. I don't know if the present Daly's there in Rineroe C. Clare know any more than we do about Thomas and Lucy Daly.  I am going to arrange a meeting with my cousin soon and hopefully she might have a bit more information and I'm hoping there will be some photos of the family farm and of our present day Irish Daly relatives.

As I am a keen family researcher myself, I have inherited from my deceased mother her research collection of the Daly family which she had collected over the years. An extensive research of our  Daly's in C. Clare was carried out by the Clare Heritage Centre in 1995 which is very interesting and very informative.  It consists of records such as land values.  Some baptism information, one in particular shows a Daniel Killeen as a sponsor (god-father) to one of Thomas and Lucy Daly's children so he is most likely Lucy Daly's brother.  Only two of Thomas and Lucy Daly's children's birth were recorded.  It also gives death information, dates and what they died of such as Thomas Daly died 17 May 1871 aged 52 years, his occupation was a farmer and stomach cancer which he had for 1 year was recorded as cause of death.  Lucy Daly nee Killeen died 11 March 1892 aged 68 years and heart disease which she had for 3 months was recorded as cause of death.

I also have John Joseph Daly's death and marriage certficates and a few BDM certs of his children as well.  John Joseph Daly' died 15 July 1936 aged 81 years and is buried at Waikumete Cemetery, Auckland, NZ, his trade/occupation was a Draper.  He married Margaret Frances Killen (our great grandmother) on 13 January 1887 at St Patrick's Church, Addison Flat, New Zealand.  Margaret was born about 1868 at Brighton, New Zealand, she died 20 March 1958 aged 90 years and is buried at Waikumete Cemetery, Auckland, NZ.  Her father Richard Killen (our gg grandfather) came from C. Rosscommon to my knowledge but I do not know where her mother Mary Carty (our gg grandmother) was born.  They were married on 09 October 1869 in New Zealand.  Mary Carty's parents (our ggg grandparents) are James Carty and Mary Kenny.  On some records Carty is spelt McCarthy or McCarty such as on John Joseph Daly and Margaret Killens marriage certificate has McCarthy, so not sure which one is correct.  Do you have any information on these familys: Killen, Carty/McCarthy/McCarty and Kenny, if so I would be very interested.

You may have noted that John Joseph Daly's wife's maiden name is Killen, very similar to his mother's maiden name Killeen.  I think they all shared a common ancestor at one stage and the name has since varied in it's spelling.   I looked up the family crest for Killeen and Killen and it is the same for both the names.

I hope the information I have given has been of some help.
