My great, great grandfather, Dennis Carty, birth date Jan 1811, immigrated to Canada in 1840 where he settled on a farm in the Township of Biddulph in Middlesex County, Ontario. His death certificate (1911 - he lived to be 100) describes him as a "Saxon" who was born in the County of Cork and lists his parents as James Carty and Sagve Hannard. He was a Protestant. The little information I have on him suggests he might have lived in Bandon, Cork before coming to Canada.
He seems to have had some Irish connections to some of the various Hodgins families who came from the Nenagh area of Tipperary so he may well have lived up there at some point although he may only have met them in Canada.
Dennis married a women named Catherine (Katherine) Saley who was born in 1814 in Cork, Ireland. I believe they married in Canada and don't know if they knew each other in Ireland.
I have had no luck in finding any info on his parents or on his wife's anceestors.. Any information, leads, suggestions anyone has would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Bob,
Thank you very much for your message.
Have you heard of Griffith?s Valuation? This is a property valuation survey that was carried out in Ireland 1848-1864. I did a search for a James Carty in Co. Cork and although I did not find any record in Bandon (which is in Ballymodan parish) I did find a record of James in the neighbouring parish of Brinny:
Have you tried looking at church records in Bandon to see if you can find any record of Dennis there? Most surviving Church of Ireland records are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. Here are their websites: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ and http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42
Here is a link that gives a quick overview of what is available in the parish:
http://bandon.cork.anglican.org/parish_records.htm
Here is the email address of the Bandon Union of Parishes, it may be an idea to contact them to see if they can help you.
You mention that Catherine was also born in Cork. Do you know what religion she was? If she was Catholic you may be able to find some records relevant to her at http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/ Catholic records for the Diocese of Cork and Ross (which includes bandon area) have uploaded here frr of charge. If you can narrow down a parish of origin for her your search will be much easier.
I also came across this great website for Genealogy in Bandon that should be helpful:
http://www.bandon-genealogy.com/
Some other websites that you may find useful are:
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx
Family Search: www.familysearch.org
Genealogy Links: http://www.genealogylinks.net/uk/ireland/cork/index.html
Cork Past and Present: www.corkpastandpresent.ie
West Cork Genealogy: www.westcorkgenealogy.com
I hope some of this is helpful and that you are able to prove Dennis? link to Bandon. Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
Kind regards,
