I am looking for connections to the following:
Thomas Browne, born 24 Feb 1857 in Co.Cavan--
His Parents-
Father John Browne-- no information -- but believe likely spent entire life in Ireland--is recorded as a flax scrutcher,(Thomas' marriage cert.)
Mother Margaret McKeogh -- no information-- likely also spent life in Ireland
Thomas Browne married Eliza Jane Brown or Harrison 1 Sept 1880 at Chapel of Ease,Derakesh,Parish of Drumgoom--Church of Ireland--Rector- Henry Hare, witnesses Thomas Moore & Robert Vincent. He is decribed as a Bachelor, Flax scrutcher and living at Leighan Parish of Kill-- his father as John Browne (flax scrutcher)---page 10; item 19 of church records. Found in PRONI Oct 2012.
We know Thomas, Eliza Jane & their eldest son Joseph Harrison Browne immigrated to Canada via steerage from Londonderry aboard ship Parisian arriving Quebec, Quebec, Canada 30 Sept 1882.
While in Canada a Daughter Margaret was born in Kingston, Ontario, Canada in Dec1882.
Then we know the family returned to both Ireland and Scotland between Jan 1883 and Nov 1884 ( a son John is born in Scotland in Nov 1884), they depart again for Canada in 1886 where all remain for their life.
I have no proof of Thomas' birth in Co.Cavan except that is what is stated on his death cert. here in Canada.
I am hoping I will be able to connect with more siblings of Thomas, as it was not the custom to have only one child-- Also hoping to find some more inforamtion on John Browne and his wife Margaret McKeogh.
I thought the McKeogh connection would be easy as there do not appear to be many by that name in County Cavan, but no luck so far-- hoping for a break

Can?t see the Browne/McKeogh marriage in the civil indexes. It was possibly before April 1845 in which case you would need to rely on church records, and you would nee dot know which church it took place in.
The occupation on the marriage cert is probably scutcher (rather than scrutcher).
The townland of Leighan, Leighin or Leaghin is in the parish of Kildrumsherdan.

Ahoghill;
Thank you for your quick reponse.
Yes, it is possible the Marriage of John Browne & Margaret McKeogh did take place before 1845-- also possible it took place in another county-- however, going on the assumption that it did take place in the area of Leighan-- I would suppose it to be the closest Church of England to their home.
I was in Ireland last Oct and in the area of Cootehill. I went to Parish of Drumgoon and saw Chapel of Ease at Dreakesh, ( unfortunately it was locked and we could not find any one to show us around). This was the Chapel where Thomas Browne Married Eliza Brown or Harrison, (her home church).
Then drove into the Leighan area looking for a nearby church-- were directed to an Old Burying Ground in KIll - which I understand is the short form for Kildrumsherdan, ( the grounds were so overgrown we were unable to find anything pertaining to my research); but did not find the church. When I came home did find the church online-- I believe we were near Ashfield Church of Ireland. If this is the closest church to Leighan I would suspect it is the church which has the Browne & McKeogh records. My question then would be-- is there a Rector at the Ashfield Church, or a secretary with which I connect to do some research for me? Or is there another Church closer to Leighan?
Thanks for correcting my spelling of scutcher-- was hard to read. I understand the term and its' function.
Thank you again for your help

Kil or Cill is the Irish work for church. Any place name with that in it usually means there is or was a church there at some time in the past.
There are two Church of Ireland churches in Kildrumsherdan parish. (The Church of Ireland is the Church of England in Ireland). Copies of the parish records are held in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast. This is what they hold:
C.I. Ashfield (Kilmore diocese) Baptisms, 1821-7 and 1839-1907; marriages, 1845- 1956; burials, 1818-27 and 1856-1935.
C.I. Killesherdoney (Kilmore diocese) Baptisms, 1796-1805 and 1810-1982; marriages, 1796- 1803 and 1812-45; burials, 1797-1802, 1811-24 and 1827-1929.
Likewise for Drumgoon:
C.I. Dernakesh (Kilmore diocese) Baptisms, 1837-1985; marriages, 1838-73 and 1875- 1942; burials, 1837-1985.
C.I. Drumgoon (Kilmore diocese) Baptisms, 1802-14 and 1825-1909; marriages, 1813 and 1825-1957; burials, 1825-47 and 1850-1915; confirmation lists, 1827, 1852, 1855, 1857, 1864, 1871, 1875 and 1878.
The records are not on-line and a personal visit is required to view them. There is no charge for viewing them.
Alternatively you can write to the Rector/Vicar, but be aware that the Church of Ireland charges for searching the records for you. I believe the rate is ?20 an hour. Here?s a link to the parish website, which appears to indicate there is no permanent incumbent there at present:
http://ireland.anglican.org/information/dioceses/parish/13730
The RCB Library in Dublin may also hold copies. As with the set in PRONI, a personal visit is required to examine them. None of these records are on-line anywhere so far as I am aware.

I can possibly be of some help.
I have microfilms of several churches in the area including:
Drumgoon Church of Ireland [Cootehill]
Killersherdeney [Kildrumsherdan] Church of Ireland, which I think is the closest Parish Church of Ireland to Leighan townland.
Dernakesh Chapel of Ease [Drumgoon Parish] - beginning in 1832
Some of the microfilm pages are impossible to read, but much information can be gleaned from the rest..
Thing is, I don't have a microfilm reader, so I must go to a library to read them.
I will do this for a person who is really stuck in his/her research and has info that links their family to the church you wish me to check out. I actually enjoy the search, it's mostly about the available time to do it. I should add that there is no search fee of any kind. It is my pleasure to assist a fellow family researcher.
By the way, the transcribed records of the Ashfield Parish Church of Ireland [Kildrumsherdan Parish] baptisms are available online for no cost. Years of Baptism: 1821 - 1864 [missing years 1827 - 1838].

otter406; Hi Patricia; I would be very gratful for some help with this family. I can't see myself being able to make a return trip to Ireland in the near future and my age will soon make traveling difficult. I have since last posting, found an obiturary for Thomas Brown. In the obituary it states(Oct 1925); that Thomas Brown had at the time of his death, a brother William Brown of Ireland, 3 sisters;Mrs James Marshall & Mrs William Cahill living at that time in Scotland and a sister Mrs John Murphy of Pittsburg, Nova Scotia Canada. I am hoping that the Misters Marshall, Cahill and Murphy are former residents of Cavan County and that they married their Brown wives there. I have no first names to help with. Of course there also is the Brother William Brown. I will try to find him in the Ireland cencses. I did check the Ashfeild baptisms but got no good hits there; so am supposing the records are in the Kilsherdany church. Is there a way I can pass on material to you Patricia? I am not sure if we are allowed to give out emails; but, if that is possible mine is lawslor@gmail.com
