I recently found the the baptismal record for my 2nd gr grandmother Honora Kelegher/Kelliher on Jun 19 1836 in Castletownroche.  Parents were William Kelegher and Ellen Troy.  Sponsors were Daniel Kelegher and Margaret Troy.  Priest D. Foley.

Two Honora Kellihers emigrated on the Susan from Cobh, Ireland in Oct 1852.

Honora married James Bernard Roche in Boston in 1859.  She died in 1894 in Boston.  They had 11 children, one being my great grandfather.   Three died in childhood.  James' brother Patrick also married an Honora Kelliher.  I am not sure if they were the two on the Susan.

Honora's parents, William Kelegher and Ellen Troy, married on Jan 18 1835 in Castletownroche.  The witnesses were Daniel Kelegher and James Troy.  Priest was J. Fitzpatrick.

William may have been born in Castlelyons in 1803.

I am not sure if William and Ellen emigrated.  Any suggestions on best strategy to continue searching for them would be helpful.

Also, how to find the church(es) these events took place and variations for the name Troy would be great.

Thank you.

  • Hi Maureen,

There is a record of the birth/baptism of a William Kelliher 1803 in Cork on www.rootsireland.ie

I searched for Kelegher but this is the only match that came up. The parish is Castlelyons rather than Castleroche. Maybe one of the Cork experts could tell you the relationship of the two parishes.

You would need to purchase the baptism record to get parents' names ( a few dollars).

There was no William Kelegher in the Tithe Applotments or on Griffiths Valuation.

Perhaps this is due to the spelling variations in the name.

There was one record on ancestry (attached) but the spelling is different again!

  • Thank you, Col,

I did indeed purchase that baptismal record for William in Cork for 1803.  I am really just guessing at his birth year, though.  So  I'm just not sure if it is my William.  It lists the parents as William Keliher and Elizabeth Nugent.  No sponsors recorded.  I checked in Mitchell's Atlas and see where they are located.

There is this death record for a William Kelleher in MA, but again, no way to confirm or reject.

I got a message from a cousin last night who just received from an aunt the guestbook from his grandfather's funeral in 1969.  The first person to sign was an Agnes Kelleher, could be a cousin or a coincidence.

I'm happy I at least found Honora's birthplace, so maybe I should just rest my laurels on that. :)
