Looking for a source of information on the large migration of Irish to Newfoundland at the beginning of 19th century or earlier. Many returned temporarily to get married or have children baptised and then came back to Newfoundland. Folk lore has it that my family of Power's came from Cork but that my have been just the departure port.

Hi,
Can you give me a few more details such as the first names of some of the people you are looking for information on,dates of birth, and their place of origin in Cork? With more information I will be able to help you better.
I have enclosed two links I think will be helpful for you to find the information you require these links are as follow the Canadian national archives.http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/index-e.html,and the local archive for Newfoundland http://www.telusplanet.net/public/mtoll/nfl.htm.
If you give me some information on your relatives the Powers from Cork I will be more than happy to try,and discover their origins, what happened to them, and other relevant information using the available resources. Alternatively you can try,and find the information yourself using the resources I have linked you.
Kind Regards

Thank you Shane for your reply. I have little info on them. Names that I have located in my hometown of St. Mary's are John, Edmund, Michael, Patrick. William and James The events surrounding these names were in the period 1800-30. I recently found a will from Edmund in which he leaves money to a Catholic Parish in Dunhill. So I suspect there must be some firm connection there. My great grandfather was John who was born about 1815 but I don't know if he was born in Ireland or Newfoundland. Would appreciate any info or suggestions that you might be able to give me. All the best

Hi Michael,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I am pleased to tell you while looking for information on your family the Powers I went looking for information on Dunhill parish church. When I did so I found information on a possible link not in Cork, but Waterford in the south east of Ireland.
I don't know the extent of the connection of the Power family to Dunhill castle, and church, but this link might be interesting http://www.powerclantramore.com/dunhill-castle.html.
Also if your relation Edmund donated money to Dunhill church which I cannot find in Cork. I am beginning to suspect your family might have significant history in Waterford.
The reason I say this is because I would doubt Edmund Power would donate money to Dunhill church unless he had a significant relationship with the parish.
This is why I am going to link you to the website for the Dunhill, and Fenor parish, and suggest you work from their since it is the only concrete place you know your relations have history with http://dunhillandfenorparish.ie/df/.
I think you should contact the parish, and ask for information on whether they have birth certificates,or marriage records on Edmund Power at the least, and the relations you have named here. I think this approach will be a more productive use of time than searching internet sites for months.
At least if there is no information on the Power family in Dunhill it is a link marked off. I hope I am helpfull, and if you need any more help do not hesitate to contact me.
Kind Regards

Sorry for the time it has taken myself to get back to you. My surname would be among the ten most common in Ireland and mainly associated with the West of Ireland and the city of Galway.
That is a good distance from where I think your relations come from but people get around a lot in Ireland. I hope I have helped you out if you need any more help I am willing to lend a hand.
