Hi, Grace Fox,

Following up your message posted on 28 May 2013, - being unschooled in Irish, I was puzzled by the "le meas" , at the end of your last message. I now know it means "with regards". Thanks for that!.

I did know, as you mentioned, that Patrick Barry (Jr.) was buried in Middleton cemetery although the name on the headstone was Patrick McCarthy Barry instead of his baptised Patrick David Barry. I was told this some years ago by a kind lady living in Midleton called Mairead. She was going to find out more for me but I never heard from her again, sadly.

I wonder if Ann McAuliffe, whom you mentioned previously, has been able to find any of the descendants of Patrick and Kate (McCarthy) Barry who were the above Patrick's parents?

I am curious that the old records spell the town's name Midleton while more recently the name seems to be Middleton. I much prefer the idiosyncratic "Midleton" but am I correct in assuming it is no longer used?

le meas,

Donald Barry

  • Hello,

I'm brand new to this service and I'm not sure where to start. I saw your posting re Barry in Midleton so I thought I'd start here.

My gt gt grandmother was Bridget Barry, who was born in/near Midleton about August 1811.

She was married at the old St. John's Church in Midleton.

Her parents may have been James Barry and Ellen Dolan (phonetic spelling in US record is Dumlen).

Might  you have any info relating to this Bridget or her potential parents?

I have searched the Midleton church records while in Midleton and while at NLI in Dublin.

Seems there were many Barry families in Midleton back then; 15 Barry families in 1766 religious census for Midleton.

    Regards,

    Michael

  • Hi Michael

Sorry for delay in replying, but we've been away. Got back last week.

Given Bridgett's dob she is of my gx2 grandfather Patrick's generation. But, firstly, there is no Bridgett among his children and although I have the name in other branches (e.g. Bridgett Goode of Ballinakill, Galway) it doesn't appear to be a Barry "family"name.

But I'm not even sure if my Patrick who lived and worked in Midleton was actually born there. (There is a suggestion of a link to Cloyne parish). My Barry's seem to have a link to some McCarthys of Cloyne?

vAs you probably know the M'ton records don't go back far enough. And the1766 census gives insufficient detail.

Sorry I can't help much on the information you've given.
