Trumble's of Sligo

Your search for information will be much easier if you can narrow down a more specific place of origin in Co. Sligo. Did his RIC record not mention a parish? Each record usually contains the name of the individual who recommended him. This is important to identify an exact place of origin, because the recommendations usually came from local clergymen or magistrates who knew the recruit personally.

I did a search of the Irish Times surname database to see how many households were recorded with the name Trumble in the mid 19th century-only 3, 2 of which were in Sligo.

You can see what parishes these names were recorded in in Griffith?s Valuation. This is a property valuation survey carried out 1848-64. It doesn?t give any genealogical information but can sometimes be used to tie a person to a specific place.

The two people recorded were a landlord John and a tenant Sarah- are any of these names relevant to you?

Have you looked into his siblings emigration? Generally, more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure so you may be able to find parish of origin here.. The University of Woolongong has produced, on microfiche, a complete index and transcript of all information concerning immigrants of Irish origin recorded on ships' passenger lists between 1848 and 1867 for New South Wales. Meredith's RIC record just lists his native county as Sligo and his Trade calling as Farmer - but it did give the name of the J.P. who recommended him as J. Woods so, as you say,  this may be useful in narrowing down the search area.

I am hoping to get some information on the Australian connection shortly and if it is of any use I will post what I find.
