Charles' had a first wife named Mary who died in childbirth along with her child. charles' parents were Charles Haughey and Mary Byrne. Brigid's parents were Patrick McGinley and Catherine Gallagher. Anyone with any info please contact me

  • Charles was born in about 1875. I cannot find him in the 1901 Census but I know that he must have married his first wife soon after 1901 because on her gravestone she died in 1906. He married my great granny Brigid in 1909 and died July 25th, 1925. Their first child, Patrick, is present in the 1911 Census and was just one year old at that stage.

I didn't get notified about this message either. In any event, I think this is the 1901 census record for the parents of Charles Haughey. This family was living in Glencolumbkille parish.

I also did not find the younger Charles in the 1901 census but he could have been somewhere else ( Scotland, England working?). I did find the marriage index record for the 1905 marriage to Brigid. If you want the actual record, you can write to the GRO www.groireland.ie for a copy. Fill out the GRO form and provide the quarter/year of marriage, registration district ( Glenties) and the volume and page number ( 2 and 123). Cost around 4 euros.

  • Hi Katelyn,

Did you find the information you required? Charles and Brigid are my husband's grandparents. I have been doing more research recently. If you need any help let me know, there are a lot of relatives still about.

  • Hello Avril,

I just saw your message to Katelyn and thought I would introduce myself! I am Kathleen Laughman and live in the States. My maternal grandmother was Kate McGinley who was Brigid's younger sister.  I happen to find Katelyn last year through this site...quite by accident. I have been researching the family and it has been difficult due to my Mother passing away so young. I look forward to hearing from you!

    Sincerely,

    Kathleen Laughman

  • Hi Kathleen

Wonderful to have a reply from someone. Whereabouts in America do you live?

My husband's name is John (Sean in Ireland) Haughey. His grandparents are Charles and Brigid and they lived in Cloghan which is a hillside area in Glencolmkille. His uncle again Charles and his wife Rosie lived there in the same house until they passed a few years ago. Their daughter lives there now. The main street had 4 of the younger siblings of Charles all living next door to each other. They have all passed now. My husbands father, also a John, was a younger brother of Charles and he married a girl called Mary Cunnea, also from Glen. They had 13 children. My husband is one of the older ones. I did live in Glen for a while. Difficult to cope with being related to practically everyone in the viillage!! We now live in Northampton in Central UK. I am actually Welsh my maiden name is Lewis.

In the 1901 census Biddy is 13 and Kate was 5.

Have you been back to see everything. John's family now lives in Carrick, Donegal Town, Letterkenny and a few other counties. Although he was born in Glen, they moved into a bigger house in Carrick.

My personal email is avril.haughey@sky.com. If you want to email me direct I can pass over some copies of photos and paperwork.

How did you end up in USA?

I should also say my maternal grandmother's family I have managed to trace back to 1532. Some of my relatives signed the declaration of independence. They left as they were catholics being persecuted and lost a lot of their land in Berkshire. I am one of 9 and my grandmother's brother emigrated to Canada with his 10 children and they have spread. So like the Haugheys/Cunneas I have relatives abroad also.

Looking forward to hearing from you. Let me know what you want to learn and what I can help you with.

Are you on Facebook? The Cunnea's and Haughey's are all on there. We can link up.
