Hi
I am Debbie Dixon from Australia (nee Ashton). Wondering if anyone knows anything of the original owners of Ashton's Pub in Clonskeagh? My father's family owned the pub in the late 1800s but I don't have any more information.
Thankyou,
Debra Dixon (nee Ashton)

Hi Debbie.
In the 1911 census a Thomas Ashton is listed as a vintner in Vergemont/Clonskeagh. In 1901 the same Thomas was listed as a blacksmith, so maybe Ashtons dates from then.
Hope this helps.

Hi Debbie,
On the 29th August 1899, Thomas Ashton applied to the courts in Dublin for the transfer and confirmation for a 7 day license for 11, Vergemount, Clonskeagh. Therefore he was not the original owner.

Hi Debbie,
I know it's been a while since you posted but in case you're still interested..
I am also descended from the Ashtons and I have some family information. This was gathered by a late aunt of mine and I hope it is accurate.
The Ashton family came to Ireland from Cheshire in the mid 18th century and were blacksmiths. They are listed as living in Clonskeagh from 1843. Henry Ashton 1848-1894 married Mary Burgess in 1874 and took over the public house which had originally belonged to her late husband. After his death the pub passed to his brother Thomas.
The pub remained in the Ashton family until 1963 when it passed to the Collins family..
Best wishes
George.

Hello again, I have not been on the site for quite a while. I originally posted re the owners of Ashton's Pub in Clonskeagh (I can see here way back in August 2013)!! I apologise for those of you who have very kindly replied and I have not responded to you with such very useful and interesting information - gergoode (Sunday 25th August 2013, 07:58AM), BrendanJoseph (Sunday 2nd March 2014, 10:26AM) & GMOCallaghan (Tuesday 5th May 2015, 12:22PM).
I visited Ireland in 2014 as part of a trip to the UK visiting Mum's side of the family and came across to see Dad's father's original hometown of Clonskeagh as well - where I stayed in Terenure at a lovely B&B and was able to go out to Ashton's pub on two occasions for a couple of meals and a chat with current staff. Unfortunately the current owner was not around at the time but has emailed me since then and was delighted I had visited - as, amusingly, were all the Dublin taxi drivers, who were so typically friendly as I have found all the Irish to be.
I was intending to do some family tree research while over in Dublin but time simply ran out as we were travelling on a fairly hectic schedule - often the case when travelling from Australia!!
George ( GMOCallaghan) - for some reason, I had only noticed your reply last night - must have been missed in my post notifications somehow, and was thrilled to see the connection you described. The more I read the more it started to make sense, as I know for certain my father had cousins called Collins - so it seemed they took over the pub. Dad was always a bit hazy about all those details - he had talked about it a bit with Mum years ago which was passed on down to me but unfortunately both my parents are no longer alive. Dad was born in Australia so any stories of his father and before were all passed down to him, as he had never been to Ireland himself.
Am intending to launch back into the family tree research this year and would love to return to Ireland at some point and see & do more there. It would be great to be able to be in contact with people from Ireland, particularly people who are decendants/have connections with the Ashton/Collins families in the Clonskeagh area.
Please contact me if anyone would be interested in communicating and I am happy to share any information I have that may help you in your own research.

Hi Debra,
I sincerely hope I can still reach you on this post. My name is Carol Dixon Walt. I am looking for my ancestors (Dixon) in Ireland, as I need some documention; but it is literally a needle in the proverbial haystack. My ancestor (Benjamin Dixon) came from the Dublin / Wicklow area and emigrated 1839/1840 to Cape Town South Africa. He married Maria Lovdy/Lovedia Manifold. His parents were James and Jane Dixon, who remained in the Wicklow/Dublin area. I know many ships transported people from Ireland to Australia, so my question to you is are you guys (Dixon's) from Ireland and how might we be connected from the 1800's and even the 1700's or whatever period your ancestors emigrated. Any information might be another puzzle piece for my (what seems to be a million pieces) puzzle. If you want to email me that would be awesome as well: anniehunter1211@gmail.com I'm not sure how the notification would work if you were to answer on this forum. If anyone else could answer that would be great too.
Kind regards
Carol
