Would like to find family of Michael Horgan born 1860-65. Was a harness maker in cork city on grand parade in early 1900's. would like to know name of first wife and any children from that marriage..she died late 1890's.

would also like to know name of his mother and father. I have found gravestone in old cemetery in balleyvourney. Might be family of Cornelius Horgan or Sean Horgan

Do you know if Michael's first marriage was in the Ballyvourney area or Cork City? When did he marry his second wife and what was her name? Thanks.

Below are the 1901 and 1911 census records for Michael and Kate. Looks like he had at least two children with his first wife and four more with Kate by 1911. I will continue to look for the marriage index record for the first marriage.

The 1901 census shows a son Frank age 12 and the 1911 census shows a son Matthew age 22. I think this is the same person and not two different children. I looked at www.familysearch.org and found this birth index record for a Matthew Francis Horgan in 1888 (which fits the ages in the two census reports). I'm guessing that Michael was in Cork City by this time. You can contact the GRO www.groireland.ie for a copy of this birth record which will show the names of the parents. Fill out the GRO form and provide the quarter/year of birth, registration district (Cork) and the volume and page number ( 5 and 102). Costs around 4 euros. You can then use the parents names to find their marriage index record. You can then order the marriage record from the GRO. The marriage record will show the names of the fathers of the bride and groom and where they were living. You can also look for a death index record for Mrs. Horgan who probably died in the early 1890s.

By the way, did you notice that Michael's stepchildren were all born in America?

  • Thanks so much for your help.  I did know most of the facts you've uncovered but I did not know how to access the birth records. I will do that right away and with luck will learn the names of his parents'parents.

I do appreciate your help very much
