I'm looking for information (e.g., marriages, births, deaths, etc.) on the relatives and family of Michael Fitzgibbon and Margaret O'Brien that lived in Murroe (Mongfune?) between mid 1800's and early 1900's.
Michael Fitzgibbon was born in Limerick abt 1808 and died abt 1879 in Limerick.
Possible children born to Michael and Margaret are as follows:
Church baptisms of children born to Margaret O'Brien & Michael Fitzgibbon:
Surname First Name Year County
Fitzgibbon Helen 1827 Co. Limerick
Fitzgibbon Margaret 1829 Co. Limerick
Fitzgibbon Gerl. 1831 Co. Limerick
Fitzgibbon William 1833 Co. Limerick
Fitzgibbon James 1836 Co. Limerick
Fitzgibbon Elizabeth 1839 Co. Limerick
Any information on what happened to this family and their descendants would be appreciated...thx!

Silvia:
I checked the 1901 and 1911 censuses for Mongfune. There was a William Fitzgibbons and his family in the 1901 census and by 1911 William was a widower and only his son Timothy was living with him. I believe this William is the 1833 William in your note. NOTE the 1901 census transcription incorrectly shows Tim as Finn.
There were also O'Brien families in Mongfune in the 1901 census.
You can do more census searching for other family members at http://census.nationalarchives.ie When you search use Abington as the DED for researching around Mongfune. It also looks like another son of William could have been in Tipperary in 1901 because the 3 year old grandson was born there. Abington parish does border Co. Tipperary. You can also search www.familysearch.org for birth, marriage and death index records and write to the GRO www.groireland.ie for the actual records.

Thank you for your information, but I am familiar with the Irish census data. I was looking for additional information on the descendants of this family!

Hello,
I have had a look in our local parish records and I found no records of the baptisms of any children to Michael Fitzgibbon and Margaret O'Brien.
However at these times people might not have gone to their local church but the nearest one .The Townsland of Mongfune in Murroe Parish is actually very close to the neighbouring parish of Cappamore , so they may have gone their to baptise their children , however the Cappamore records only start about 1845 so unfortunately , we cannot prove this .
I did look for records for any the above children and here is what I found , there are records in Murroe for Fitzgibbon and Gibbons , there is a lot of cross over between the two so I believe them to be all same .
William Gibbons mar Ellen Fleming 25 Jan 1868
- John Fitzgibbon b 1869
- Ellen and Mary Gibbons b 1871
- Margaret Gibbons b 1873
- Hanora Fitzgibbon b 1875
- David Fitzgibbon b 1878
- CatherineFitzgibbon b 1881
- William Gibbons b 1885
Adress for all children at time of Baptism was Mongfune
I also found a
James Gibbons mar Sarah Hickey 24 Sept 1854
- Mary Gibbons b 1855
- Hanora Gibbons b 1858
I found to possibilties for Margaret ,
Mgt Fitzgibbon mar Andrew Hickey 02 July 1854
Mgt Gibbons mar Martin Ryan 09 Feb 1861
It could be worth a try looking in the Cappamore records for marriages of the other children .
If you think some of the above are your relations let me know and i can give you full dates and sponsors.
Hope this helps and if you have any questions let me know

Hello ?ine,
Thanks so much for looking up all this information. My name is Silvia Gibbons. My husband's great grandparents were William Fitzgibbon and Ellen Fleming. His grandmother was Catherine Fitzgibbon. So, all the Fitzgibbon/ Gibbons names you've listed are likely her brothers and sisters. There may have been 2 more brothers as well, Michael (born abt 1868) and Timothy (born abt 1888).
I think that some of these siblings stayed in Ireland, while some others moved to the USA (Catherine ended up in Chicago, where we still live) and another to Australia (I've been in contact with the grand daughter of David there).
I believe Margaret and James that you mention were William's siblings as well.
Below are the church baptisms of children born to Margaret O'Brien & Michael Fitzgibbon:
Surname First Name Birth Year County
Fitzgibbon Helen 1827 Co. Limerick
Fitzgibbon Margaret 1829 Co. Limerick
Fitzgibbon Gerl. 1831 Co. Limerick- probably Gerald?
Fitzgibbon William 1833 Co. Limerick
Fitzgibbon James 1836 Co. Limerick
Fitzgibbon Elizabeth 1839 Co. LimerickWe are trying to find out about what happened to all these relatives that stayed in Ireland. So, any information you may have located on these particular Fitzgibbon/ Gibbons births, marriages and/or deaths would be welcome!
We will also take your advice regarding looking for more records via Cappamore parish.
Thanks again for your kind assistance!
Best Regards,
Silvia Gibbons

Hello ?ine,
Just following up on your previous message. I would appreciate a bit more information on some records you previously located.
Would you be able to provide dates and sponsors for children of William Gibbons & Ellen Fleming (see below). There may have been 2 other sons Michael and Timothy as well.
Also, James and Margaret may be siblings of William Gibbons as well. Can you provide any information on name of fathers and witnesses on their wedding records?
William Gibbons mar Ellen Fleming 25 Jan 1868
- John Fitzgibbon b 1869
- Ellen and Mary Gibbons b 1871
- Margaret Gibbons b 1873
- Hanora Fitzgibbon b 1875
- David Fitzgibbon b 1878
- CatherineFitzgibbon b 1881
- William Gibbons b 1885
Adress for all children at time of Baptism was Mongfune
I also found a
James Gibbons mar Sarah Hickey 24 Sept 1854
- Mary Gibbons b 1855
- Hanora Gibbons b 1858
I found to possibilties for Margaret ,
Mgt Fitzgibbon mar Andrew Hickey 02 July 1854
Mgt Gibbons mar Martin Ryan 09 Feb 1861
It could be worth a try looking in the Cappamore records for marriages of the other children .
If you think some of the above are your relations let me know and i can give you full dates and sponsors.

William Gibbons mar Ellen Fleming 25 Jan 1868 sp Timothy Gibbons and Mgt McNamara
- John Fitzgibbon b 27 June 1869 sp John Fleming and Mgt McNamra
- Ellen and Mary Gibbons b 09 sept 1871 sp William Fleming , -----Meighan , Timothy Fleming and Catherine Fleming
- Margaret Gibbons b 13 June 1873 sp William Hayes and Johanna Fogarty
- Hanora Fitzgibbon b 22 Nov 1875 sp John Keane and Eliza Fleming
- David Fitzgibbon b 10 Aug 1878 sp James Troy and Kate Shinnors
- CatherineFitzgibbon b 26 Jan 1881 sp ---------- and Mgt Keane
- William Gibbons b 22 Nov 1885 sp John Gibbons and Mary Gibbons
I looked again for Timothy and Michael but no record for either either in Gibbons or Fitzgibbons,i am working of a transcribed version of the records so may they were omitted during this process , i have found that a few of my own relative are omitted too, also with the two versions of the names there could have been extra confusion.
James Gibbons mar Sarah Hickey 24 Sept 1854 sp Wlliam Hillard and Mgt Moore
- Mary Gibbons b 25 Aug 1855 sp William Nicholas and Johanna Ryan
- Hanora Gibbons b 21 MAr 1858 sp Patrick and Mary Molony
Note since sending first message I notice that fot the two above children that the father is recorded as Thomas and not James , i think it would be rare for two Gibbons men to marry two different Sarah Hickeys , the dates match up too , however it hard to say whether his true is James or Thomas. maybe the census may tell you.
I found two possibilties for Margaret ,
Mgt Fitzgibbon mar Andrew Hickey 02 July 1854 sp William Fitzgibbon and Susan Hickey
- Thomas b 04 Aug 1855 sp Daniel Kinane and Sarah Kinane
- Mary b 31 Mar 1859 sp -------- and Bgt Gibbons
- James b 06 Mar 1860 sp William Fitzgibbon and Susan Hickey
- Mary ( Boher) b 02 June 1861 sp James Donovan and Ellen Ryan
Mgt Gibbons mar Martin Ryan 09 Feb 1861 sp Patrick Ryan and Mary Gibbons
no children found in murroe records to the above.
You wont find any mention of the fathers names on marriage records from the church , you must obtain civil records for this and these are available from 1864 onwards.

Hello ?ine,
Thanks so much for all this valuable information. It appears that many of the Fleming and McNamara sponsors of William & Ellen Fitzgibbon (or Gibbons) children were probably relatives (e.g. siblings, cousins, etc).
My great grandmother Ellen Fleming’s father John Fleming married Mary McNamara abt 1839 in Murroe.
John & Mary Fleming had several children- Ellen (b 1840), John (b 1844), Patrick (b 1847), Daniel (b1849), William (b 1850) and Michael (b 1852).
Also, I recently confirmed that the parents of my ggfather William Fitzgibbon were Michael Fitzgibbon and Kitty (or possibly Catherine) Ryan- not Margaret O’Brien. I’ve attached some useful information I found for Michael Fitzgibbon and Margaret O’Brien and their children that you may want to add to the Ireland Reaching Out database for future reference.
I cannot find the marriage record of Kitty (or Catherine) Ryan to William Fitzgibbon. There is a marriage record of Catherine Ryan to Thomas Fitzgibbon in 1834 in Co Limerick. Could this be the Michael Fitzgibbon that married Kitty Ryan?
There are records of some children born to William Fitzgibbon and Kitty Ryan- Patrick (b. 1835), Margaret (b 1839) and William- my ggfather (also born 1839 in Murroe & Boher parish, sp Martin Ryan and Eliza Waters) in Co. Limerick.
There were other records of children of Michael Fitzgibbon and Catherine Ryan- Bridget (b 1833) and David (b 1842) in Co. Limerick.
Is it possible the Margaret Fitzgibbon that married Andrew Hickey on 02 July 1854 could be my ggrandfather William’s sister? If so, then she would have married very young (if born in 1839). Sp listed on her marriage record were William Fitzgibbon and Susan Hickey.
Thanks once more for your kind assistance.
Best Regards,
Silvia Gibbons

Hey Silvia,
I dont think that the Mgt that married hickey is a sister , that would make her very young when she got married and I never came across a case of some getting married that young , though I am sure it happened, Also i have a look in tha baptismal records and i found 10 Children born to Michael and Kitty/Cath Fitzgibbons/Gibbons There was another Mgt born 1849 which would indicate that the older Mgt died.
- Bgt 1833
- Patrick 1835
- Mgt 1839
- William 1839
- David 1842
- Cath 1844
- Ellen 1846
- David 1838
- Mgt 1849
- Hanora 1849
LAst three found under Gibbons, mothers name on all records was a mixture of Cath and Kitty.
I also had a look at the records for the above married but no records in eithe Fitzgibbons or Gibbons
You mentioned there was a Thomas Fitzgibbons and Cath Ryan , I didnt find this the murroe records but i have seen this happen where a first name was written down incorrectly or that there was a error in transcription,

Hello ?ine,
Thanks again for all your assistance. I've actually been able to connect with a long-lost Fitz cousin living near Dublin that is a grandson of William & Ellen Fitzgibbon. He has started to look into some of the family records. However, I believe one record he has not been able to locate is the actual marriage record for David Fitzgibbon (b abt 1878) to Mary Ellen McCarthy (nee Liston) abt 3 October 1914.
Any thoughts on where else we may be able to look to try to locate this marriage record?
BTW, David and Mary Ellen eventually emigrated to Australia and had 2 sons.
Thanks for all your help.
Best Regards,
Silvia Gibbons
