In the 1901 Leitrim Census I find my grandmother's family  Francis and Ellen (nee McDermott) Gray with their children,  Catherine, Josephine, Thomas, Agnes, Rose, Mary, Margaret (Maggie) and I think John.  they live with Ellen's mother, Catherine McDermott and Catherine's brother whose last name is Bohan.  Supposedly Catherine and her husband had moved to California where Ellen was born and then returned to Ireland.  I cannot find any records to prove this and do not know Ellen's father's first name.  Would love to find more info and Francis' parents' names and what happened to the Gray males who remained in Ireland even though all the sisters moved to America.

Francis and Ellen married in the summer of 1879. The civil marriage index record is below. You can write to the GRO www.groireland.ie to get a copy of the marriage record. Fill out the GRO form and provide the quarter/year of marriage, registration district ( Mohill) and the volume and page number ( 3 and 201). The record will provide the fathers names for the bride and groom and where they were living when married. Costs around 4 euros. Based on the names of their children, I'm going to guess that her father's name was Thomas.

The family actually lived in the townland of Tawnagh More. The 1901 census record said that Ellen was born in Leitrim, however, the 1911 census indicates she was born in America which confirms the California story.http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Leitrim/Drumard/Tawnagh_More/660642/
