Bourke

Hello, Kathy,

I have had a look in our parish records and I did find 2 William Bourkes born 1825 - below however , i did not find any siblings matching the above ,

William to John Bourke and Catherine Kerby - 25 Aug 1825

William to  Michael Bourke and Judy Breannan - Dec 1825

Similarly I looked for a baptism for Bridget Corbett and I did not find anything ,

Are you sure they came form Murroe Co.Limerick , as there is also one in Co .Donegal and sometimes they are mixed up.

Do you have any further info on the above , that may help confim that they were from Limerick ,

Hi, First I need to offer accurate names. The Johanna was Honora, so sorry that I did not cathc that error. Our records state Limerick, including his burial headstone which reads William Bourke born in Co. Limerick, Ireland died Feb 8, 1902 aged 78 years, however family records state 1825. I used the date from his headstone. We have many records with the family history, published stories, bibles, land records etc..which is really alot to have dates and information passed down. Most of my family I do not have such info. He arrived in the states at the port of New York on 17 March 1856. (He lived in New York one year than Ill. where he married in 1858 and finally in 1862  to Nebraska but thisinformation is not important to you) 1856 would be the year that he emigrated from Ireland.He was a gardener in the old country.

Only one record state he was born in Morroe, however, all records state Co. Limerick. This is the spelling as it was written. I had thought it was Munroe and realized it was Murroe.

In June of 1858 Bridget Corbett accompanied by Honora Bourke and Patrick Bourke arived in New York and within a month they had joined William. William and Bridget were married on 11 July 1858. She was engaged to William in the old country. He had come ahead to secure employment and make way for them to join him.

Bridget Corbett was born 11 July 1836 to John and Ceila Corbett. Now, I will tell you that family history states she was related to Jim Corbett the heavy weight champion boxing in the early part of the 20th century, however, he is not from Limerick, to my knowledge.Research shows that this James Corbett was from Co. Mayo although his parents and family did emigrate and live in Ill. for a time period before going west. Wether this is just a false claim I do not know, or wether the Bourkes moved to Mayo or the Corbetts were originally from Limerick I do not know. I am stil researching this.

Our family records do state that Bridget was born in Limerick, no town listed. I am sorry but this is the only information I have. Thak you for all your effort in helping us- would be great to meet family. Kathy

I have had another look through our records and I cant seem to find any family that has three siblings William , Hanora and Patrick of those dates.

Of course that is not to say that they are not from the Murroe , they may have been baptised in a neighbouring parish .

Your best bet with Bridget Corbett , is to put the info on the Limerick page and someone might recognise the names and might be be to pin point the place she came from.

Hi, My name is David Brown and I have been researching the Bourkes of Murroe for several years. My 4X Grand father James Bourke brn 1813 Married Mary Minihan brn 1819. They were married at the Murroe Catholic Church, the Holy Rosary.

I have traveled twice to Murroe to visit with Father Ryan at the Church, he has the baptismal records and marriage records on hand. I also have met with two Bourke families, a great experience.

Hi Thank you for taking the interest of researching William for us. To the best of my knowledge William Bourke was from Murroe with the information forwarded. His birth date could have an margin or error, I used the dates from what was inscribed on his headstone.I am quite sure he was from Limerick. The written infomation states Murroe and was passed down with the mis spelling of it. I am not as certain that he was living in Murroe or possibly even Limerick as an adult at the time of his emigration, however, I suspect that he lived at this  location for many years as he must have spoken of for it to be recorded in the family. I am sure of the year of his arrival and that of his siblings and Cecilia Corbett. The nagging question to me is that, unles it is just not true, is that Cecilia (Celia) Corbett was related to family that also arrived in the states and first to Ill. but they were not from Co.Limerick. Wheter she was related or not she eigrated with William's siblings.  Maybe Cecilia was not a direct relation of this family and the two locations for Corbetts were correct. I wish I had nore information. If I had to guess I would say from naming patterns that his parents were John and Catheriine but that is a guess and not based on any evidence and again if his birth year was 1825 and not lets say 1824. Yes, sometimes the transcriptions of names and dates can be very frustrating,. We even experienced some of our relatives providing misinformation. Especially with how common the Bourkes of Murroe were back in the 1800's. Back then there were 42 Bourke families living in Murroe. Also, Co. Tipperary which borders Murroe and Co Limerick had even more Bourke families.

Our James and Mary Bourke settled in Chicago around 1865, there is a Bourke burial plot at the Calvery Cemetary in Chicago where they are buried.

If I come across a William Bourke born abt 1825 I will forward it on to you.
