A Bridget Toland from Ard, Cloontagh, Clonmany is showing up in a number of unconnected family trees, and I am trying to find out whether she is my great great grandmother. The Bridget Toland I am seeking moved to Scotland and married Patrick Donachy (Donaghey). Their eldest son, also Patrick, was born in 1864 and a daughter, another Bridget, was born about 1873.

Hi Mary,
My apologies for replying so late to your request. I will ask a member of the connected Toland Family of Ard, Cloontagh, Clonmany if they have any more information on Bridget Toland to see if they can help you.
Civil registration began in Ireland on 1st January 1864 (1845 for Protestant marriages only) and in Clonmany Parish, the church records (Baptisms and Marriages) began on 1st January 1852.
Unfortunately, as Bridget was born before either of these "start" dates, and was married outwith the parish, it will be extremely difficult to find out exactly when she was born. I am assuming that you have a copy of her civil / church marriage certificate from the 1860s in Scotland to Patrick Donaghey (also a local name here believe it or not). Luckily, civil registration in Scotland began on 1st January 1855. Married women indexed under maiden & married names.
Certs include:
–names of both parties’ mothers and fathers
–mothers’ maiden names
It would also be worth looking at both death certificates in Scotland for Bridget Donaghey (nee Toland) and her husband Patrick.
Certs include:
[For 1855 and since 1861]
–name of spouse and deceased’s parents
–father’s occupation and mother’s maiden name
[From 1868]
–ages are given in indexes
I will get back to you with regard to the Toland family of Ard, Cloontagh. In the meantime, please let me know as much information as possible.
Please also note that the Donegal Ancestry centre is no longer in existence. They have a website now only and do not do genealogical research any more.
Kind regards,
Jennifer Doherty
