Hi, looking for any information on the McManus family from Kilbeggan.

Jane (a dairymaid) and her brother Matthias McManus (farm labourer) from Kilbeggan emigrated from UK to Australia on ship William Sharples in 1842. According to shipping documentation their parents were Matthias and Mary McManus of Kilbeggan. They could both read and write and were Roman Catholic.

Any information would be very much appreciated.

Thanks, Dianne

  • Hi Diane,

The quaintly named site rootsireland.ie has a baptism record of Jane McManus with mother Mary born 1834 in Westmeath. When father's name Matthias was included there was no match.

Similarly, there was no record of any Matthias births/ baptisms or marriages other than 1 in 1919 in Leitrim. However when I changed the name to Matthew I got 2 results Matthews born 1832 & 1881 in Westmeath.

rootsireland.ie is a pay site so it will cost about $8 for a record.

You can google the Tithe Applotments (1823-37) which are free to search; there are 4 McManuses in Kilbeggan there.

Similarly on the Griffiths Valuation (done Westmeath 1854 & free to search there are 7 McManuses in Kilbeggan.
