The only written document I have on my Flahertys is a note from my grandmother saying her grandfather "came from a little town called Carrigobila near Sligo...The post office for it is at Ballisadaire."

I have traced the family back to Catherine CUMLISH or CONSLIP and William Flaherty.  At least 4 of their children immigrated to Massachusetts in the US in the 1840s & 1850s: Michael (1825-1902), Sarah (c1830-1910), Patrick (1834-1913), and Edward (c1841-1910).  There was at least one other daughter who probably immigrated, and there may have been other children I am not aware of.

The family was Roman Catholic.

I would love to hear from anyone who may have knowledge of this family!

Best regards,

Kathleen from New Jersey, USA

I think your Flaherty family came from the townland of Carrowgobbadagh in Kilmacowen civil parish.

I first checked the Tithe Applotment listings for Co. Sligo. I found a Pat Flaherty in Carrowgobbadagh. (Pat could have been the father or uncle of William.

The Griffiths Valuation was conducted in Co. Sligo in 1858. There were 28 Flahertys listed including  a Catherine Flaherty in Carrowgobbadagh (possibly the widow of William). www.askaboutireland.ie for the Griffiths.

There was a Flaherty family in the 1901 census in Carrowgobbadagh headed by an 80 year old William. Not sure of his relationship to your family.

Carrowgobbadagh is just north a few miles from Ballysadare on the N4. Use Google Maps to see the location.
