My name is Steve Collins from Melbourne Australia, and I am interested in making contact with anybody with Collins or Davy ancestors from Sligo - particularly from Achonry.  The townlands I am interested in are Carrowntober and Drumbaun, around 1800 to 1900.

My Great, Great Grandfather, John Collins (b. 1833) came out to Sydney, Australia via Liverpool, aboard the "Golden Era" in 1855.  His elder sister Mary (b. 1827) made the same trip aboard the "Malvina Vidal" in 1853, and their siblings William (b. 1835) and Bridget (b. 1841) came out to Sydney in 1860 aboard the "Fitzjames".  They also had a sister Catherine (b. 1835) who remained in Achonry.  William, Catherine and Bridget were residing in Carrowntober, Achonry, Sligo before applying to emigrate.  All 5 were illiterate Catholic farm labourers or domestic servants.

Their parents were Michael Collins (born possibly 1800 +/- 10 yrs?) who was still alive in Achonry in 1860, and his wife Catherine (nee Davy, or possibly Davey, Davie or Deavey - spelling uncertain due to illiteracy of children), who died at some point between 1841 and 1853.  Not certain of the existence of any other siblings (if any).

I have a lot of information about the ones who came to Australia, but seek information about their ancestors and siblings (if any) and the descendants of those siblings.

  • Hello Mandy,

I have finally come across your reply on the 'Ireland Reaching Out' website, and first of all, I've not noticed that I have acquired a wife called 'Lucinda' in recent times, and I have never attended any 'Taylor' family reunion, so I have to disappoint you on both counts but despite that, I suspect that we are probably 3rd cousins or thereabouts.  I have sent a few things to Geoff Collins (at Frankston?) over the last few years about what I've dug up on the ancestors, and have a bit of more recent stuff I'd be happy to send to you about the family, if you are interested.

I am the Great Grandson of Richard Collins (younger brother of your William James Collins) and am very interested in any stuff you can send me on the names and details you know of on your side of the family.  I am also very interested in any old photographs of William or his wife, or any of the other siblings or their children.

Please contact me direct at sj.collins113@gmail.com

    Regards,

    Steve Collins
