Andrew Close

I can trace my family back to Andrew Close, who I believe was born about 1804. I'm not sure where he was born, but I believe he is buried in Kircubbin (d. 11 May 1856; Secton of Trinity Church, Kircubbin).

I believe that he married Elizabeth Wilson and I believe their children were Robert Shaw b 1827 – ; Jane Close b 1830 – ; Andrew Close 1832 – 1882; Elizabeth Close b. 1837 – ; > Hugh Wilson Close b 1843 – .

Andrew (b 1832) is my direct ancestor. His birth is said to be recorded in the Inishargy Parish Church database.

Andrew married Matilda Bell 17 Sep 1853.  

Newtownards Registry Office shows Andrew, a batchelor and labourer, son of Andrew Close marrying Matilda Bell, along with the witnesses.

The wife, Catherine Matilda Bell (1829-1881) may have died in Downpatrick.

The couple seem to have had 6 children born/registered in and around the Fish Quarter, Cardy, Greyabbey areas. (John b 1855, James b1857, Andrew b1860, Elizabeth b1862, Jane b1864, Robert b1867)

One of these children, Robert Close (b. 1867) is my great-grandfather. He and his wife (Jane Ann Robinson, who he married in England) emigrated to Scotland where their children were born.

Robert was born 7 May 1867 in Fishers Quarter, Greyabby, Newtonards (District), Down County, Northern Ireland. I have a copy of his birth record showing parents Andrew Close and Matilda (Bell).
