Hi there Col

MANY thanks for your message.  Proof of the marriage of ELLEN CRAWFORD's parents in Downpatrick is great and irrefutable.

Was there any reason why PATRICK DRAKE (and maybe his parents, etc)  would have moved from Cork to Down?  I realise that after the Potato Famines many people emigrated to Canada/America and Australia, but would they also have moved to another part of Ireland?

I do wonder if we can trust the point that Patrick's father was also called Patrick (according to the record of his death).   After all, if he did not know his parents' names at the time of his marriage, how could his daughters (who subsequently registered his death many years later) know?

Additionally, during the years that Patrick and Ellen lived in County Durham, England, Patrick anglicized his name to Peter (on Censuses and the marriage certificates of some of his daughters).  Maybe that's why they give his father's name as Patrick?????

Do you agree?

Best wishes, Kathleen

  • Hi Kathleen,

I don't consider myself an expert on these matters - I'm just a gopher who tries to find records.

Could moving from Cork to Down have anythong to do with converting to protestantism / anginisation? Many did during the famine years to get fed. Could the name change to Peter be connected to this?

Was it actually stated on the marriage cert that parents were unknown or were their names just not recorded?

    Col
