According to his death certificate in Canada, Hugh was born on Feb. 17 1782 in Aghalurcher, Fermanagh. He died on Feb 22, 1870 in Province of Qu?bec, Canada. The record states that his wife was Rose McAvoy/McEvay/McEvoy (?). They were married in Ireland and their daughter Marie Anne McCaffrey was born at sea while coming to Canada.

There is also another record of Hugh  in the British Regimental Registers of Service, 1756-1900 in Canada. This record states he was born in Clogher (county of Tyrone) and that he was a weaver. This Hugh was a 1st Foot Soldier in the 4th Battalion of the British army. He enrolled on Oct. 10th 1809. Birth is indicated as around 1780.

So I am not sure if the two are the same person or which of them is my ancestor. Clogher is relatively close to Aghalurcher but still two different places. Perhaps he enrolled in Clogher but was born in Aghalurcher?

One thing for sure: He was a member of the British army (Inneskellen fusiliers, perhaps) and sent to Canada where he eventually settled with his wife and daughter.

Any info would be appreciated.

  • hi,

I am afraid official records for Catholics in Ireland were not recorded before 1864.

Church records go back before that but not back to 1782 to my knowledge.

    fyi

There is a family tree on ancestry owned by a Jerome PEPIN that has the daughter Mary Anne born at sea in 1813.

There were quite a few McCAFFREYs farming in Aghalurcher,Fermanagh in 1833.

I don't find a marriage record for a Hugh McCAFFERY in Fermanagh c.1811.

I am afraid that is all I have.

  • Many thanks for your quick reply Sean. I understand for the records.

Yes, the Jerome Pepin site is where I found most of the information I have. I will look up your other links as well. Much appreciated.

Hugh enrolled in 1809 (military record attached, 4th entry from bottom) so I suspect he married before. Marie-Anne was born in 1813 but the 3rd bataillon of the 27th Infantry Regiment (Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers) arrived in lower Canada in Aug 1814. His pregnant wife must have crossed over along, which is strange for a military operation... Once peace was established, soldiers were discharged and given lots. I have a first record for Hugh owning lot #2 on lane #6 in St-Germain of Grantham in Quebec in 1817, along with a James McLeand.

I understand there was a church in Aghalurcher but if there are no marriage records there (I presume those would be church records), then perhaps I should take a chance with someone who covers the Clogher parish? (and how would I go about that?)

I am more interested in marriage records than birth as I would like to know more about his wife Rose McEvoy as well (for whom I have nothing but a name). Hugh's death record is also attached, indicating he came from Aghalurcher (last 2 lines at bottom, the rest is in French).

Any suggestion would be appreciated. Sooner or later I will come visit and meet a few cousins there. So I need to know which pub to go to! :-)

  • hi,

I belong to a Fermanagh mailing list, I recommend you join it, as there are a number of people with areas of specialization e.g. Military records that may be able to help, also a few of them are genealogists living in Fermanagh.

Just send an email, introduce yourself and post your question, they are very friendly people...

    Here is the link...

    http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/NIR/FERMANAGH-GOLD.html

They have a search engine for the datbases they have created here...

    http://fermanagh-gold.com/search1?term=mccaffrey&catalog=&subcat=

A marriage usually took place in the Brides Parish, but I don't find McEVOYs in Aghalurcher c.1858.

    There are McAVEYs though...

    http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/fermanagh/aghalurcher.htm

There was a Thomas McEVOY in Fermanagh c.1858...

  • Thanks Sean,

I will join the emailing list and look at their database.

Hugh would have married around 1810-1812, cause Rose was 9 months pregnant during the cross-over to Canada in 1813. In 1858 they would have been old and living in Canada so no need to look for a marriage in Aghalurcher around 1858.

If I wanted to investigate with someone who covers the Clogher parish, Do I need to re-post my request with them on your site or can you pass it over to them?

    Cheers,

    Guy Le Blanc
