I'm researching COUGHLIN/DRISCAL families from Co. Cork.  From the recently posted free on-line parish records, I think I am a descendant of Michael/Mick COGHLAN, bapt. 1808 in East Schull/Skull, who m. Mary DRISCOLL in East Schull/Skull in 12 Feb 1831 or the one that m. Mary DRISCOLon 13 Feb 1836 in West Schull/Skull. I don't know which & haven't found bapt. recs. for their  children b. in Co Cork.  Does anyone know the history of these two couples & their children?  Here's what I know about my COUGHLIN & DRISCAL families...

My ggrandmother, Nora COUGHLIN (COUGHLIN/COGHLAN), who was born 4 Jul 1843/4  in Co. Cork.  She came alone to the US in 1858/59 @ age 15.  Two aunts (surnames unk) who had come earlier, paid her way.  She settled in Norwich, CT where she worked as a seamstress, saving money to help a brother to come ca 1862/3.  The rest of the family joined them in CT ca 1866-68, where her father bought farm land, having sold his land & stock in Co. Cork, Ireland.  She went to CA in 1868 & m. Henry HAMILTON, a teamster/farmer.  Her parents are listed on her d.c. & on a Calif. pioneer registration form completed when Nora was still living & kept @ the CA State Library as:  Michael COUGHLIN & Mary DRISCAL/DRISCOL.  Michael is listed as b. 1808 in Co. Cork, while Mary/Katherine (on d.c.) is listed as b. 1818 in Co. Cork.  Their marriage is given by Nora as 1833 in Co. Cork.  She states that Michael d. in 1886, Lebanon, CT, where he is buried (no known marker).  Mary (Katherine on d.c.) d. ca 1880, Lebanon, CT & is buried in Norwich, CT.

I connected w/ descendants in Norwich, CT, of Nora's brother, Timothy COUGHLIN.  His birth year is given variously: as 1851 on tombstone in St. Mary's Cem., Greenville, CT; as Sept. 1855 on the 1900 CT Census, Bozrah (age 44); ca 1853 on the 1910 CT Census, Bozrah (age 57); as 1845 on the 1880 CT Census, Lebanon (age 35); as ca 1854 on nat. papers in Sept 1880 (age 26).  He died in 1915 in Bozrah/Fitchville, CT near Norwich.  Timothy was a farmer & had a cleft palate, as does a descendant.  Timothy m. Jane A. MAHONEY, b. Apr 1858 (on d.c. & 1900 CT Census) & d. 28 Jul 1923, New Haven, CT.  She is the dau. of Cain MAHONEY & Ellen DRISCOLL, both b. IRE (obit.).  They had 12 chn.

Nora & Timothy had 2 other siblings, also b. IRE, who came w/ the family to CT in the 1860s:  John & Kate.  John's b.d. is given as ca 1849 (age 21) in the 1870 CT Census, Goshen, Norfolk Co.; ca 1849 (age 31) in the 1880 CT Census, Lebanon; as Jun 1845 (age 54) on the 1900 CT Census, Lebanon; as ca 1849 (age 61) on the 1910 CT Census, Lebanon & immig. 1864; as ca 1850 (age 70) on the 1920 CT Census, Franklin/Yantic & as immig. 1863/64.  His obit. lists him as the son of Michael COUGHLIN & Mary DRISCOLL. He m1 28 Feb 1875, Lebabon, CT, Kate COLLINS, b. 1859, Lebanon, CT & d. 7 Apr 1881, Lebanon, CT; m2 ca 1884, CT, Elizabeth "Lizzie" HURLEY, b. Dec 1854, IRE & d. aft Mar 1823.  John had 6 chn.

Kate, the youngest, was b. Nov 1855, IRE, prob. Co. Cork.  She went w/ her older sister, Nora, to CA in 1868.  She worked in homes in SF & m. ca 1894, William A. DAVIS, a painter, b. Aug 1860, SWE. They had no chn.  They are 1st found in the 1900 CA Census, San Francisco, where she is listed as b. Nov 1861 (age 39) & imm. 1867.  In the 1910 Census, San Francisco, she is b. ca 1863 (age 63) & immig. 1870.  By the 1920 CA Census, she is given as 55, b. ca 1868, & 10 yrs. later in 1930, her age is 68 & b. ca 1862, while her immig. is listed as 1888.

I have not found any bapt. recs. for any so named chn. in Co. Cork w/ parents: Michael COUGHLIN/COGHLAN & Mary DRISCAL/DRISCOLL.  Are all the Co. Cork parish records on-line?

  • Hi,

Thank you for your message. I hope that someone recognises this family and is able to help you in your research.

Unfortunately, not all the Co. Cork records are available on-line free of charge. I assume it is the Irishgenealogy website that you have been using? At the moment only Catholic Records from the DIoceses of Cork and Ross are available on their website-this covers Cork city and only a few other parishes. However, records from the other parishes may available online for a fee. A very useful website is the Irish TImes. It gives a breakdown of Cork by Catholic parishes, showing what records are available in each parish and also where they can be accessed, whether online or otherwise. Here is the link:

  • Hello,

    I was very interested in your posting, especially with reference to Jane Mahony, born 1858 to Cain Mahoney and Ellen Driscoll as these two are our gg grandparents, father and mother of our g grandfather Denis Mahony, born April 1849 in Ballycomaine, Muintervara, near Durrus in southwest Cork.  I found Cain in the Tithe Lists in Glawn, Mount Gabriel, Schull, sharing 147 acres ( pretty poor land! ) with Jerry Mahony and a John Coughlan, with a Cornelius Mahony ( Cain's father? ) on Mount Gabriel nearby.  If these are the same two people, they married in Schull West in January 1827 and had these children baptised;

Ellen 1829        Schull East, sponsors Michael Driscoll, Margaret Mahony

Cornelius  1832      Schull West, sponsors  John Mahony, Ellen Carty

Ellen  1829         Schull West,  sponsors Mick Murphy, Julia Magra ( sic ) ??

Denis   1837       Schull West,  sponsors Batt & Joan Driscoll

Jeremiah   1845    Schull East,  sponsors  Cornelius Mahony, Ellen Driscoll

    Denis   1845                Muintervara

I cannot find any evidence of them after these dates, the first Ellen & Denis must have died, and I think that Cain's father might well have been named Cornelius, and Ellen's father named Denis.  Our Denis went to London and married there in 1871, so must have gone there a little earlier.  If your Jane A Mahony was born, according to the census, in New Haven, it must mean that Cain and Ellen went out from Ireland sometime before 1858, perhaps leaving their other children behind?  This is all very tantalising, what do you think?

  • Hello  My paternal gr. grandfather was Jeremiah Coughlin b. 1856 in Norwich, Ct. on Feb 24,1879 he married Julia Driscoll who was born in Dromid-Waterville,Kerry,Ireland. She immigrated with her parents Timothy Driscoll and Hanora "Nora" Shea and arrived around 1862. Both families lived on the same block in Norwich,Ct. Family lore is that the Coughlin line came from County Cork, but I have no supporting documentation. Jeremiah's parents were Jeremaih b. Dec 1814 Ire and Bridget Connelly b.Jan 1813 Ire. I believe Jeremiah and Bridget married around 1837 and immigrated around 1851.  It appears as though there may be some connection.

Wold greatly appreciate any help.   Dayle Coughlin-Golden

  •  Hello.

I happen to come across your mess SOMEHOW while I am transcribing alot of Coughlan related docs to Facebook's BMD Exchange page.

***For some reason this name caught my eye...  Mary Coghlan marrying a Thomas Daunt, Jr. in 1806.

Just wanted to tell you in case you didn't know, that there's ALOT of Marriages listed in this book I found on Familysearch.org and it's also on FindMyPast, however I like that FamilySearch shows the image numbers, etc.

"Ireland, Diocesan and Prerogative Marriage License Bonds Indexes, 1623-1866," database, FamilySearch

(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-994X-YPQS?cc=3460239 : 27 September 2019), > image 1 of 1; extracted by FindMyPast. Images digitized by FamilySearch. National Archives of Ireland, Dublin.

Here's some image numbers to check out relating to Coughlan :  They have scanned 2 pages at a time but both pages have the same "image number" .

Image 203 (on the right side of the page.)

    Image 204, both pages

    Image 205, Left side.

Image 242, on the right side.

    Image 243, on both sides.

Back to transcribing....  Hoping you either have your breakthrough already, or I hope this helps :D
