A Chairde :                                                                                                                                   My great grandfather was named Michael Lally and I believe he was from Loughrea or surrounding area. I believe he was born in 1839 and arrived in the United States in 1858. I think but do not know for sure that his father may also have been named Michael. Any help that you can provide would be greatly appreciated. I would be happy to supply you with any information I have on our family in the US.

  • Hi Jerry

There is a record of the birth / baptism of Michael Lally 1839 on www.rootsireland.ie/

The record will have the parish and MAY have parents' names - some do / some don't.

You need to purchase credit to view the full record.

Thanks for the tip. I do have an account with rootsireland. The only record I found there was a Church Baptism Record for a Michael Lally in Dunmore. Not sure if this is the one you were refering to. However while on rootsireland I did find a Church Marriage Record for a Michael Lally in Loughrea in May of 1838. This could possibly be my great, great grandfather. Thanks again for your help.

  • I have a Mary Lally in my family tree, she is my 3rd great grandmother. I believe she was born about 1797, in 1865 she appears in Milford Massachusetts with her husband Patrick Hubon. Mary died Feb 6 1873 in Milford at age 77. Her death record shows her parents as Thomas Lally and Mary Loughnane. Patrick Hubon and Mary Lally were the parents of Winifred Hubon (married Thomas Kelly) (1795-1888), Margaret Hubon (married Patrick Dunleavy) (1804-1892) and Patrick Hubon (married Catherine Maher in Loughrea regitration district, they had a child Mary who was born in Ballymacward), (1820-1886). I have no confirmation for any dates they are based upon ages reported in census so could be off by some years.I think I have found a death registration for Thomas Laly from 1864 in the Loughrea Registration District. He was 70 so his birth would have been 1794, which if this is him makes Winifred's birth off by many years (possible).Wondering if your Lally's and my Lally's are related.

  • My family were Lallys from Loughrea, Kiltullagh, Ballymacward.  I often come across other Lallys from this area but cannot prove they were related.  Except that the University of Leicester has done research on relationships between people with the same surname.  On average two men with the same surname have a 24% chance of being related.  Names relating to an occupation, such as Baker, have a lower probabilty as there were bakers in every town.  What raises this probablity is if the name is rare, has an unusual spelling, if it relates to a specific locality, there was a history of no geographic movement.  I would claim that Lally falls into these categories.  Also the name Lally relates to a specific, fairly small and local, tribe.  In such a case the probablity of two men being related rises to 93%, they say.  So I think all the Galway and Mayo Lallys in the 1830s were related.  This is the basis on which I wrote my book about three Lally families, including some Marys, in the Great Famine, "The Leaving of Loughrea" and I hope you don't mind the advertising as we are all family.  Please have a look at it on google or amazon.  Thanks

I have purchased your book, read it, and enjoyed it very much.  Did not find anything conclusive about my family.

    Thanks, and Happy Holidays
