I’m doing research on the Ardiff’s of Leixlip in county Kildare...

One of the people I’m researching is Maurice Ardiff (born 29 Jan 1895 in Leixlip, died Nov 1950) whom married Sarah Doherty (born 12 Jun 1896, died 8 Apr 1946) on 18 Apr 1927 in Dromore West, County Sligo (according to GRO records).

They had at least three children… Mary Kathleen Ardiff born 28 May 1932, Margaret Philomena Ardiff born 21 Sep 1935 and Helen Bernadette Ardiff born 27 Oct 1938.  All three children births were registered in Dromore West.  Mary Kathleen married James O’Brien on 11 Oct 1951 again in Dromore West (GRO records).

Mary's marriage in 1951 is the only one that shows in the GRO index files (available on familysearch.org), so I have no idea what happened to the other two sisters.

I’m looking for descendants of any of these people, but I know nothing of Sligo so I’m not sure where to look to fine tune my search.

  • The indexes to the marriage records on Familysearch only go up to 1958. If the other 2 daughters married after that (as seems quite possible from their dates of birth) then the records won?t be on-line. You would need to contact GRO Roscommon to enquire whether they can search for you for possible marriages.

  • Brendan,

Thanks so much!  This makes complete seance!

Mark Ardiff (Maurice’s father) in the 1911 census is a 1st cousin, 3rd removed of my wife. She was born in Dublin

I have a large spreadsheet of Ardiff related records I need to research someday.  The records are from the GRO in Dublin, the GRO records for England, rootsireland.ie and irishgenealogy.ie.  I have purchased every record on rootsiireland and have pulled about a quarter of the records available from the GRO in Dublin. Although I have many, many more records to pull, I have  identified  2/3 of them as related to my wife. I just need to get the records to have the exact dates.

Anyway, I can’t believe I missed the connection for Margaret and Helen in the records from England!

I have been to the GRO in Dublin many times when I have been ‘home’ (we live just outside of Boston), and one of my wife’s cousins goes for me about once a month when we’re not in town.  As far as England, I have no experience other then searching the index’s at family search.

While the dates look good for the marriages of Margret and Helen, how can I validate that Maurice is the father listed on the two index records you provided (As well as getting the exact dates and not just the registration quarter)?  Is England as difficult as Ireland with obtaining records?  I have zero experience with researching in England.

Additionally you say that Sara Ardiff (nee Doherty) died in Glenamoy, Ballina.  Is there a source for that online or can you recommend a place to validate?

  • Jeff,

The source for Sara's death is an obit in the Irish Independent Newspaper.

The only way to validate the marriage records in England is to order the marriage records in England. You can order the records online.

In my real life I am a probate genealogist, I believe the marriage records are your family.

I am in the GRO in Dublin at least twice a week, they are a great bunch, they help me a lot.
