I am researching my 3rd Great Grandfather, James W. Kilbane (The W. could be William or Warren) born in 1815 in Mayo, Ireland. He came to the US in 1859 with his brother Michael. I am not sure of Michael's date of birth and we have no record of anything for him after he came to America. James fought in the civil war and in 1866 married Margaret (Maggie) Welsh/Walsh/Welch (born in Tennessee). Maggie’s parents were from Ireland as well. The family ledger says that Maggie’s parents met in West Virginia and moved to Tennessee around 1850. I am not sure when they got to America. Maggie’s Death certificate lists her Mother’s maiden name as Neylon.
The only record I can find in Ireland is Ireland, Griffith’s Valuation, 1848-1864 for James Kilbane. I have heard that I might be related to Johnny Kilbane the boxer but I can’t find a link. I do know there is a family story of two brothers fighting over mules and one was never heard from again… This might be Michael and James? Any information would be appreciated!

Hi Erin
The only Kilbane birth/baptism record in www.rootsireland.ie/ for Kilbane in Mayo 1815 + - 20 years is Thomas KILBINE baptised 1821 but not in Achill.
I couldn't find his marriage to Mary either.

The Tithe Applotments (free online) have 2 Kilbanes in Achill, Mayo in 1828 - Pat & Owen.
findmypastireland (a pay to view site) has census and army service records for James.
Family Search has his birth as 1815 but no county or parish; there is another born 1820 in Cloughmore, Achill.
As a last resort I looked at the Irish phone book for Kilbanes in Achill & there are 14 - we have had some success from people writing to those with the surname living in the parish of their ancestors.
