i have his birthdate as May 26, 1873. His parents were Patrick McCarthy and Margaret Healy and some family research suggests that they were from Kilcatherine. He had a brother John and a sister Johanna. I am looking for information for the purposes of applying for Irish Citizenship.

Robin:
Kilcatherine civil parish is in the Castletown registration district. I found a civil birth index record born in 1873 in the Castletown district. I presume this is your grandfather. You can get a copy of this record from the General Register Office. I'm not sure if a copy is sufficient for Irish citizenship purposes. You may have to get a certificate which costs around 20 euros compared to 4 euros for a copy. You may want to clarify. Below are instruction for getiing a copy orf the record.

Go to this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx In the middle of the page there are links for birth, marriage or death certificates. Hit the link for the form you want. You will likely get a screen asking for a User Name and Password. (This is a program bug that the GRO has to correct). Hit cancel and the appropriate form should come up. Print the form and complete the requested information. Also provide the information from the index record--quarter/year of the event. registration district and the volume and page number where the event is recorded. Make sure you ask for a copy which costs around 4 euros. ( A cert costs closer to 20 euros). You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you.

I have only just got to see your posting (which is nearly two years late) but I believe I have found your family in a townland called Ballycrovane. Please get in touch if you think I can help you further.

Hello Roger,
I thank you for the information you sent and did send it off to the Registrar and they just responded that they cannot find a birth certificate. I am wondering if it is a baptismal certificate and that is why the cannot seem to find anything. Would you have any suggestions on how to ask them for the information you found.
I appreciate any further information you may have for me.
Thank you again for your efforts.

The James McCarthy born to Patrick McCarthy & Margaret Healy of Ballycrovane was born (or baptised) in May 1868. He had a brother John born in May 1870 but as far as I can see, he did not have a sister named Johanna. The James from Ballycrovane married a Mary O'Shea and then emigrated to Butte, Montana. You haven't given enough detail so far for me to know whether this might be the person, even though the dates of birth don't tie up. My feeling is that your people came from somewhere other than the Beara peninsula but I would be happy for you to prove me wrong in some way.

I have not had much success with the Irish government. My grandfather James McCarthy indeed had a brother named John and he was married to Mary Shea (which may have been O'Shea) and they lived in Butte, Montana and had 4 daughters and 1 son. My mother was their youngest child.
Would you have anymore information that I might try to give the Irish government so they would be able to issue a birth certificate for him.
Thank you again,
Robin
