I am serching for my maternal grandfathers family.  I have found a reference to Michael Driscoll's Christening on 10 May 1873, whom I believe is my great gradfather,  He came to America with his sister Lizzie and his future wife Nora Shea about 1896/97.  The Christening referenced Kilcatherine parrish.  His parents were listed on his marriage license as Jerry (Jeremiah?) Driscoll and Mary Murphy Driscoll.

My sisters and I will be visiting Ireland in late May and early June this year and would like visit this area.

  • Dear Mary

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and thanks for your query

As you can see from the link below Kilcatherine is a Civil Parish in Co. Cork:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/townlands/index.cfm?fuseaction=TownlandsInCivil&civilparishid=235&civilparish=Kilcatherine&citycounty=Cork

The records for the corresponding Roman Catholic Parish of Eyeries begin in 1824, though baptism records did not begin until 1843.

On that basis you could search www.familysearch.org or www.irishgenealogy.ie for a records of any Driscoll ancestors. On the family search site you should also be able to locate a civil record of Michael and Lizzie?s birth (as well as any other children), as civil registration began in Ireland in 1864 (generally speaking).  A civil record should provide you with the names of the previous generation, so you should also conduct a search for the marriage record of Jeremiah and Mary.

As an aside, you may also be able to find a record of Jeremiah on the Tithe Applotment Books 1823-1837. Although only the heads of household are mentioned it can be useful:

    http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/index.jsp

The Griffith?s Valuation 1847-1864, a land survey, may also list Jeremiah and it can be searched for free, here:

    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

Once you have the townland details from the above records, you could as a matter of general interest, search the 1901 and 1911 Census to see how many Driscoll families lived in the area during that time:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

Best of luck with your search and your travel plans

  • I am afraid I have only just read your posting and am therefore way too late to provide any information prior to your trip to Beara.  However, the O'Driscoll farm is in the same townland as my wife's family farm and is still in the same family.  I do hope you got to meet them on your trip.  If there is anything I can do to help then please let me know.

Hello again Mary.  You asked where I was.  Pleasant enough question - but when I tell you that I'm just outside London (but I will be back in Beara in April), it doesn't help much, does it.  I have attached a couple of screen shots which show my house in Beara in relation to Knockroe where Michael O'Driscoll came from and one showing the relationship between the O'Driscoll houses and my wife's home farm, where her brother now lives.  Did you get to visit Beara and if so did you meet your cousins John and Nora?  This is all likely to get too complicated via Ancestry and too personal for this site so please send your email address to bearagenealogy@gmail.com or tell me how to find you on Facebook.  Ken
