My 2x gt grandparents were Peter Corrigan and Bridget Bourke.  Their daughter Margaret was born in Bridgnorth, Shropshire in April 1854, but I have not been able to find a marriage for Peter and Bridget in the U.K. or Ireland.

I can only assume that they came from the district of Crossmolina as I found a marriage for her older sister Mary Bourke to John Harte in April 1846 in Crossmolina with an address for him of C. Keel but no parents are named.  John, their son, was baptised in July 1856 in the parish of Crossmolina with an address being given as Mylaw (or Moylaw).

Any assistance would be appreciated.

  • Good Morning

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and thanks for your query

As you can see from the link below, the Civil Parish of Crossmolina is in Co. Mayo:http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/townlands/index.cfm?fuseaction…

The Roman Catholic records for the Parish of Crossmolina begin in 1831, with some gaps, notably between 1841 and 1845 for baptisms and 1841 and 1846 for marriages. Do you think your ancestors could have come from Co. Mayo ? it is not very far from Co. Sligo?

As this may be the case, you could search www.familysearch.org or www.rootsireland.ie for your Bourke/Corrigan ancestors in Mayo.  As you can see, there are a number of Bourke family names on the Griffith?s Valuation, a land survey taken between 1847-1864:

    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNameSearch&Submit.x=40&Submit.y=14&Submit=Submit&familyname=Bourke&firstname=First+Name&baronyname=&countyname=MAYO&unionname=&parishname=CROSSMOLINA

There are a few instances of ?Carrowkeel? in both Mayo and Sligo listed on www.logainm.ie, so it may be that your ancestors lived around the Matyo/Sligo border.

Best of luck with your search

  • Thank you Clare for your considerable time taken in providing the information on my Bourke and Corrigan query.   I will keep searching and I may get lucky.  Most of my ancestors of that period could neither read or write so would not know if any thing was incorrect on the census records.  I have found many discrepancies in particular with age where they have become younger the older they were!  It is rare to find an actual place of birth on our english census, they are commonly from "Ireland" as if it was a large  town.

My great grandmother Catherine McIntyre stated she was born in Aclare, circa 1855/56, which I know to be in Sligo and on just one census her parents Lawrence (William Lawrence on her younger sister's birth certificate) and Mary stated Sligo, which I took to be the county rather than the city due to Catherine's birthplace. After years of searching I eventually found Catherine's baptism in 1855 on rootsireland, her father is given as Larry and mother Maria Goldrick or Golrick.  I do have a marriage for Lawrence and Mary which took place in my home town of Keighley in Yorkshire so fortunately know their father's names by which to check the Irish records if I am lucky enough to find them.

I understand there is a baptismal record for a Maria Golrick on Rootsireland, which was found by another member of your forum.

I am very grateful to everyone for their help.

  • Your noting Mylaw or moylaw is actually probably MoyloughSligo, Ireland.

I would also note that I run a website for KILMACTEIGE PARISH, which is in South Sligo, and although it does not cover your area, it is the farthest from Sligo Town, next to Co. Mayo. The village of Aclare is in it, and it borders Swinford.

  • Thank you Murph for your post.  I think I may have confused the issue.  I am looking for the Corrigans/Bourkes in Co. Mayo.  When I referred to Mylaw or Moylaw it was because I found the baptism of my gt grandmother Margaret Corrigan's brother in 1856 on the Irish Family History website, which indicated  Date of Baptism; 17-Jul-1856;  address ;  Mylaw,  parish/district ;  Crossmolina, County ;  Co. Mayo,  Denomination;  Roman Catholic,  Father; Peter Corrigan,  Mother; Bridget Bourke.  Margaret, the elder of the two was born in Bridgnorth, Shropshire.

Bridget's sister Mary Bourke married John Harte 20-Apr-1846 in the parish of Crossmolina.  Her address was unknown but John's was given as C. Keel.  There were no known parents.  They also came to England before 1851 when the appear on the Bridgnorth census.

I am still trying to find the marriage of Peter Corrigan and Bridget Bourke.  So far nothing has come to light on Irish sites nor in the English parish records.

My reference to Aclare, Kilmacteige parish/district is because of my great grandmother Catherine McIntyre who was baptised there 3 Jan1855 and refers to Aclare as her birthplace.  Her parents, Lawrence and Mary were married in Yorkshire in 1847, both born in "Sligo" according to English census records.  Born circa 1827-1828 I am trying to find baptismal records for them to confirm their respective parents.  I have no knowledge as to when they arrived in England, with or without their parents.

On their marriage certificate; Lawrence McIntire gives his father as John McIntire a labourer and Mary Goulding names her father as Michael Goulding also a labourer. To confuse the issue, on Catherine's baptismal record her father is named as Larry, mother Maria Golrick.  To further confuse things I have seen the name of Goulding spelt as Goulden and Jolden (English census) and Lawrence named as William Lawrence (her sister's birth certificate.

Sorry if this is a bit epic but hope this is a better explanation than my original one in my search for these two families.
