Hello,

I am seeking information on my ancestors from Gortroe and Glonpriest. Hannah Power (born about 1880) married James Arnott and had one daughter, Ellen, who married Willie Higgins. I think James Arnott was the son of Ellen Mountain and John Arnott. I'd love to hear from anyone who knows anything about these families.

  • Carlye:

Found the 1901 census record for James who was living with his widowed mother Ellen in Creighmore townland in Clonpriest parish. I also found the Powers family in Gortaroo. In 1911, James and Hanna were married and living in Creighmore with James' mother Ellen and their infant daughter Ellen.

James and Ellen were married in the first quarter of 1910. See index record below.

  • Thanks Roger. yes, that's the right family -- I had seen those census reports before. I guess I am hoping that someone on here knows something about their descendants...we weill be visiting Ireland soon and I am hoping to connect with living relatives before we go.

That infant daughter Ellen grew up to marry Willie Higgins, but I am not sure whether they had any children.  Hannah (Power) Arnott had a sister, Mary, but I don't know if she married (and if she did, I don't know what her married name was).

    John's baby daughter Eleanor

    Died 7th Oct.1953 aged 3.

    R.I.P. Erected by the family.

The above was supplied by Phyl Irwin who is having problems getting through to Irelandxo.

The Clonpriest school book published in 2002 has the following entries

    Roll call for 1910/1919

Eileen Arnott Creighmore, Mary Arnott and Hanna Arnott,

    Roll Call 1920/1929

John Arnott Creighmore, James Arnott and Thomas Arnott with the address as Gortroe.

    Rool Call 1950/1959

Jim Arnott and John Arnott with the address as Burgess which is part of Killeagh Parish.

I believe there are still Arnotts in the area so will see if i can find out more information for you.

Regards for now. Keep in touch. Anne.

  • Anne, thank you so much for that information. That is very valuable and the best lead I've had so far in tracking down Powers and Arnotts to whom I may be related. If you or Phyl Irwin happen to uncover anything further, I would be most grateful -- you or he can email me directly at caustin[at]gwu.edu.
