My great great great grandparents, Jeremiah Lynch and Mary Lucey of Quaker Street, married in St. Finbarr's S. Parish, Cork in 1814.  Three of their children: Daniel, Mark, and John were also baptised there in the 1820s.  There were other children including Ellen, Eliza, and possibly Margaret who may have been baptised somewhere else.  In 1850, Daniel emigrated to NSW Australia. Mark and Eliza also emigrated to Australia.   In 1859, Mary Lynch died in London at the home of their daughter Ellen Riviere (nee Lynch).  She was a widow at the time of her death. I am trying to find baptism records for all the children of Jeremiah and Mary Lynch as well as information about whatever happened to Jeremiah Lynch.  It would be wonderful to find other descendents of this family as well.

  • Good Morning

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in replying to your message.

As you can see from the link below, Roman Catholic Records for St. Finbarr?s begin in 1756:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showlikerecords&citycounty=Cork%20city&parish=Cork

Have you tried searching the sites suggested below for records of the baptisms of Jeremiah?s children?

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/ : have begun a project to upload Irish church records to their site free of charge. However, so far only Counties Dublin, Kerry, Carlow and parts of Cork have been covered

www.familysearch.org : has a huge database of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland

The website Cork Past and Present is also very useful: http://www.corkpastandpresent.ie/

Other important sources include the Tithe Applotment Books and Griffith?s Valuation:

    Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1837): http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/index.jsp

    Griffith?s Valuation (1847-1864): http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

Remember to post any new information that you find here. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Best of luck with your search

  • Thank you, Clare, for the suggestions provided in response to my previous post.  The irishgenealogy.ie website was very helpful to me in locating the baptism records in my earlier post. I was also able to visit St. Finbarr's South Parish church last September.  None of the other suggestions has yielded new information.  It turns out that Jeremy and Jerry Lynch were very common names in Cork during that period.

What I have learned since my last post from a further search of the irishgenealogy.ie records is that Jeremiah Lynch was very likely the child of Timothy Lynch and Eleanor Ahern christened at St. Finbarr's on 26 Mar 1795 and that the marriage of his parents likely took place in the same parish on 26 June 1794.  Mary (Anne) Lucy was likely the daughter of Daniel Lucy and Elenor Evis who were married in the same parish on 20 Aug 1786 although I have not found a baptism record for Mary Lucy in the same records.  Baptism records for Jeremiah and Mary Lynch's daughters - Ellen Lynch born c 1828, Eliza Lynch, and possibly Margaret Lynch -  also continue to elude me.  I would be grateful to receive any information or suggestions pertaining to this family.

  • I would always search irishgenealogy and rootsireland in the case of Cork records just to be sure all parishes are covered in the search. It may be the case though that the records are missing thought he St. Finbarr's gaps are recorded as follows:

    Baptisms:  Jan 1757-July 1760; Sept 1763 -Mar 1774; July 1777-Jan 1789.

You could consider searching the Early Birth and Marriage Index HERE

    Best wishes

  • Thank you for your suggestions, Clare.  I have explored all the of them already but hold out hope that this brick wall will be resolved eventually as more resources are digitalized all the time.

  • hello IrishGreatGrands It was so wonderful to find your post as I am a descendant of this family. I am connected to Jeremiah LYNCH and Mary LUCY (4x g/grandparents) through their daugher Eliza LYNCH who married William CRABB 1844 Brisbane, Queensland. I have located the death notice for Marcus LYNCH
At Maitland Point, Sofala, on the 17th instant,
of inflammation in the bowels, after thirty-two
hours severe suffering, which he bore with Christian
fortitude, Marcus, aged twenty-nine years, fourth
son of Mr. Jeremiah Lynch, of the City of Cork,
    Ireland. source: 1851 'Family Notices', Freeman's Journal (Sydney, NSW : 1850 - 1932), 27 November, p. 11. , viewed 03 Jul 2019, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article115766439
It would appear from this notice that three other sons were born between 1814-1822. I have not located the baptisms for these three sons, Margaret and Eliza. Jeremiah's death is proving elusive as well. Would like to hear how you are connected and perhaps collaborate. kind regards Kim

  • Hello werriwee,                                                                                                                                                                       Thank you for your post. It is exciting to make contact with a descendent of Eliza Lynch and William Crabb!  I am a descedent of Eliza's brother Daniel  and have been tracing this branch of the family for many years.  The wife of another descendent of Eliza's brother Daniel has also done some excellent research on Eliza and William's story which she shared with me.  I am  aware of Marcus's sad end, thanks to the great resource - the Australian Trove.

When Daniel Lynch (born c. 1823) emigrated from Cork to Sydney in 1850 aboard the Cornwall, he indicated that he had a sister Margaret and a brother Marcus in Moreton's Bay.  I learned of this record many years ago but it was only a few years ago that I learned Eliza had emigrated with her sister Margaret, brother-in-law Michael Sheehan, and the two young Sheehan sons circa 1841. Margaret and Michael were married in the parish of St. Mary Whitechapel in London in 1838 and their first two sons were born in England before the family had two sons before emigrating to Australia. Other siblings for Daniel, Marcus, Margaret, and Eliza included John Lynch, Ellen Lynch, and one additional son, name unknown.  John Lynch (christened 1 April 1824) is still a bit of a brick wall but it is possible that he may have died young or gone to the USA.  Ellen moved to London and married the artist Henry Parsons Riviere in St. Pancras in 1849.  Presumably Jeremiah Lynch was deceased prior to 1850 when Daniel emigrated from Cork as he named his next of kin as his mother, Mary (Anne) Lucey Lynch and gave her residence as London. In 1851, the widowed Mary Lynch she was living with Ellen and Henry at 36 Charlotte Square in London, and she died at the home of Ellen and Henry in 1859.  Henry and Ellen separated sometime between 1861 and 1886. Ellen moved to Dublin and lived at 4  Pembroke Road near the Elgin intersection until her death on 26 Feb, 1906. Her niece, Lucy (possibly her brother John's daughter?) lived with her for a period in Dublin.  Margaret Lynch Sheehan died 12 Ot 1891 in Albury, NSW.  Daniel died 7 Apr 1890 in Sydney.  And, I expect that you already know that, Eliza Lynch Crabb died 11 Nov. 1873 in Queensland.

This sketches in a little of the family history. I do know quite a bit more, am happy to share, and would love to learn more about Eliza's descendents, including you.

    Thanks for posting!

  • IrishGreatGrands, thank you for your reply…and great to find another cousin.

I've been reviewing this side of my family history since seeing your post.

    Briefly:

    • 1841 census was the night of 6 Jun 1841. The SHEEHANs and Eliza LYNCH boarded the William Turner on 10 Jun 1841 at Plymouth bound for Australia. Many years ago, I noted they were indexed as SHEEAN but I can no longer find them. Sadly, I have no further information. Would you have any information?
    •  It would appear Jeremiah died sometime before Sep 1849 as he is noted as dead on Ellen’s marriage certificate. Though I wondered why the 1851 death notice for Marcus did not say “late Jeremiah LYNCH”?
    • 1851 death notice for Marcus LYNCH. It would appear from this notice that three other sons were born between 1814-1822. Presumably baptized in the same church as Eliza and Margaret.
    •  1861 census – Ceceila MILLER b1854 Bath, Somerset; Mary M SWENNEY b1838 Cork; Mary LYNCH b 1847 are noted as nieces living with the RIVIERAs
    •  I read a short biography about Henry Parsons RIVIERA online. It appears he was living and working in Rome from 1865-1884. Henry and Ellen cannot be found on the UK censuses after 1861. Could Ellen have been living in Rome with Henry or did they separate? Henry died in 1888 London.
    •  1901 census Ireland – Ellen RIVIERA living with Lucy LYNCH niece born 1861 Cork and McL LYNCH widowed female born  1831 Limerick.
    •  1906 death of Ellen RIVIERA. Primary beneficiary Mary McNALLY [could this be Mary SWEENEY or Mary LYNCH?] from the 1861 census
    • Cecelia MILLER [niece mentioned on 1861 census] was the daughter of Louisa RIVERA (Henry’s sister). Cecelia died 1938 in Victoria Australia.
    • On different documents, Jeremiah LYNCH described as a merchant, shopkeeper, publican and coal seller

Happy to share what I have on Eliza. As a pioneer of early Brisbane and Queensland, I don’t the Eliza had an easy life. Could be why the SHEEHANs went South. Eliza died aged 58 years in Gayndah.

    Kind regards

    Kim

  • Dear Kim & Irish Great Grands:

I'm delighted to see the connections that the two of you have made with each other about your family history.  If either of you would consider creating an Ancestor profile or two of members of this family for the XO Chronicles, that would be great.  The link is here:  https://irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-database

Please keep us posted on your research as I'm sure that there are other members who are interested in following your post.

    Kind regards

    Jane
