I believe that my ancestor, Patrick Canty, may have come from Kilflyn.  He was born about 1828 somewhere in Kerry and moved to Buffalo, NY.  He was a blacksmith and married Ellen Carrol (most likely in Buffalo). His parents were Patrick and Ellen Canty.  (This information comes from his death certificate.)

I believe his mom may have been Ellen Rice.  I have found other children (Ellen, Mary, Timothy, and John) of Patrick and Ellen (Rice) Canty in the Buffalo, NY-area, so I'm assuming (based on that that Patrick's mother is, indeed, Ellen Rice, but I'm not certain.

If this is, indeed, my Patrick's family and they were from Kilflyn area, I'd love to try to find out more about the family and its history.  Thanks!

  • Good Morning

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in replying to your message.

As you can see from the link below, Kilflyn is a Civil Parish in Co. Kerry:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/townlands/index.cfm?fuseaction=TownlandsInCivil&civilparishid=1137&civilparish=Kilflyn&citycounty=Kerry

Records for the corresponding Roman Catholic Parish of Abbeydorney begin in 1835 for baptisms and 1837 for marriages. If your ancestor was born in this parish and was born in 1828 unfortunately there will be no church record of his baptism.

You could search the sites suggested below anyway as many people did not know their exact date of birth. While it is not surprising to find an ancestor 10 years older than expected, it is more than likely the year of birth is within a 5 years span either side of the date you give.

www.familysearch.org has a huge database of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland.

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/ have begun a project to upload Irish church records to their site free of charge. However, so far only Counties Dublin, Kerry, Carlow and parts of Cork have been covered.

Other important sources include the Tithe Applotment Books and Griffith?s Valuation. Even though these sources only give the name of the head of household, the information is still important:

    Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1837): http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/index.jsp

    Griffith?s Valuation (1847-1864): http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

You could also check the names of the holders of land over 1 acre in 1876 for instances of the family name: http://www.failteromhat.com/lo1876.php

Some other websites that may be helpful are:

The National Archives of Ireland: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/  you can search the 1901/1911 Census on the National Archives page too

    Irish Times: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/index.htm

    Irish Genealogy Tool kit: http://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/

Remember to post any new information that you find here. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Best of luck with your search

  • I have checked the Tithe Applotment Books.  There are four Canty's in the early/mid 1820's.  One of these could be my Patrick's father but it's hard to know:

Timothy Canty - Cunnigar, Kilcaragh, Kerry-1825

Patrick Canty - West Kerries, Clogherbrien, Kerry-1824

Patrick Canty - Drumkeen, Killury, Kerry

Pat Canty - Gullane, Rattoo, Kerry-1825
