Hello All,

I am directly related to James Walsh of Aghada, who was born about 1765 and died about 1821. Up until 1803, he owned Glenbradagh farms. His older brother William owned Currough farm and his much younger brother Thomas (b 1805 d 1839) owned Hermitage farm.

I have just inherited a relatively detailed family tree (pardon the pun) that may have answers to some of your questions.  Hopefully some of you may be able to help me expand my knowledge of the Aghada-Walsh history.

Cheers,

Jeff

  • Hi Jeff

My Aghada ancestor Michael b. abt. 1770 married Mary Dunn and had eight children! would be James brother, Michael Died around 1825, Mary and family came to Canada with the Peter Robinson’s settlers and settled in Upper Canada in 1825. Michael and Mary had eight children all born in the Parish of Aghada in Glenbradagh or Curragh. (Caragh’ and ‘Glen’.) I had hired a Genealogist from Cork and he thought that the two different area were common place. “Clearly, the family were not moving house but merely using two adjacent placenames to refer to the same homestead, a normal feature of the time even though strange to modern eyes.” I have connected with another Walsh from Aghada who lives in Massachusetts John T Walsh and he’s a descendent of Patrick b.1809 Walsh and he is the son of Michael and Mary Walsh and they left Aghada about 1850

  • Hi All,

I am looking forward to sharing info and family trees with everyone.  I would also be up for  a conference call if anyone is interested in a chat.  My family tree was produced in 1978 by George Brunton who is related to me through my GG Father.  The tree is about 30" x 72" in size, I plan on having it scanned so it can be easily shared.

Mary, I follow the Richard Walsh branch (Your John's brother).   I have attached  a photo of the John Walsh section of my tree for you.

    Cheers,

    Jeff

  • Hello All,

I am a member of Ancestry.com and I can give you Guest access to my online family tree I have been working in for the last few months. I have not yet logged all the info from my copy of George Brunton's tree yet, but am working on it.  Hopefully from there we can all improve our own records.

Mary, Some of my family here in Canada (not me yet) have visited Aghada about 15+ years ago. They were in contact with brothers Jimmy and Liam Walsh (wife Nora) and some of their 6 daughters. You can find them at the bottom right on your family tree.  Sadly, Jimmy, Liam and Nora have past away.  My sister has the contact info for some of the daughters, I will be contacting them shortly.

Because of all my digging at my family roots, I will defiantly be planning a trip to Aghada this year.

    Cheers

  • Jeff, I have been tracing the family of a Richard Walsh from the Cloyne/Ballycrooneen/Aghada area.  I would be very interested in seeing your Richard line.  My great grandfather, Timothy Walsh, son of Richard Walsh and Margaret Hurley was the National School Teacher in the Ballyrcrooneen school district from around 1880's-1920's.  I know from a copy of the family bible that a daughter Annie [Johanna] was born in Aghada on 7 Sep 1874.  Richard and Margaret also had the following children for which I have copies of their baptism records.

Richard b. 1837, baptized 2 Jun 1837, sponsors John Sheehan and Ann Walsh
William b. 1843, baptized 15 Mar 1843, sponsors John Walsh and Catherine Cotter
Ann b. 1846, baptized 16 Feb 1846, sponsors Cornelius Hanly and Mary Reagan
Timothy b. 1849, baptized 29 Jul 1849, sponsors William Neel and Catherine Walsh
Bridget b. 1852, baptized 24 Oct 1852, sponsors Thomas Edimboro and Catherine Morrison
These baptisms took place at St. Coleman's RC church in Cloyne per their parish registers.  They may have had two additional children who were not listed in the registers of St. Coleman's.  Patrick b. 1834 and Mary b. 1835.

I look forward to hearing from you.

  • Hi Carol,

I'm glad that you have joined our little Walsh-focused group. I have checked my 1978 printed tree and on-line one,  for info in Timothy. Unfortunately I have little info other than a picture of his headstone. I will send you a guest invite to view my Ancestry.com on-line tree. It will provide you with lots of info on Timothy's brothers families.  Ray and Mary from the group may have some of the info you are looking for.

I would be very interested in documenting the history you have gathered, it sounds like you have info that I don't. As well, I want to find Walsh info from villages outside of Aghada and find our when and why our ancestors settled there.

Where in the world are you located?

    cheers,

  • I'm not sure we have run in to a brick wall in researching the Walsh’s after the eighteenth century yet! It would be nice if we could take it beyond James. There is a book on line from the University of Michigan called “The Lament for John Mac Walter Walsh With notes on the History of the family of Walsh 1170-1690” I’ve just started reading this and I’m not to far into it yet. It seems to be a generalization of the name Walsh keeping within the time line of Irish History relating to the name Walsh

    http://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?num=1&u=1&seq=4&view=1up&size=100&id=mdp.39015025923155#view=1up;seq=1

It would be nice if we all could go to a common web site and feed all are information in to the same tree after all we are all related with a common ancestor I’m not the person to do this! We need some computer savvy guy Maybe Jeff or there is another Walsh in

Massachusetts that maybe could put this together

I’ve worked on and of for about 40 years on my family tree and the best thing has been the internet there is continually new information coming on line

  • Hi Jeff & Mary

I’ve included the baptism records of Michaels children all of which where born in Aghada on the farm as late as 1812. I’m just wondering what you think of this

    Your notes

James Walsh owned Glenbradagh farm from which he was evicted about 1803. Born about 1765, died about 1821

This is a record from the files of Penrose FitzGerald.

From the Boole Library, University College Cork,

    Our landlord

1809 John Walsh (Farmer), of Glynn, relating to a house and lands at Glynn, Parish of Aghada, Barony of Imokilly.

I’ve not personally read this as it is not available on line perhaps when you are visiting Aghada check this out who knows what you will find in that folder

If I’m reading this right the whole Walsh Clan lived on the same property

John Walsh (Farmer) has to be your James and my Michael’s and Mary’s Brother

  • I think I just answered my own question Both Curragh and Glenbradagh are fairly large areas

Glenbradagh 113 acres, Barony Imokilly, Civil Parish Aghada, Poor Law Union Middleton

Curragh         123 acres, Barony Imokilly, Civil Parish Aghada, Poor Law Union Middleton

So properly many family’s lived in these two areas

  • As Ray mentioned, my 2nd GF was Patrick, and from Ray's research the son of Michael.  In reviewing my records, I found his marriage record form 05-Feb-1826.  He married Frances Cashman in Aghada.  The witnesses were Edmond Cashman and Thomas Walsh.  As it was common for a brother to be best man, I am wondering if there is anyone with a Thomas in their tree around 1826.

I've just joined this site and saw your recent post:.

My wife's gg grandfather was Henry Walsh bap 26 May 1839 in Aghada RC Church & he married Margaret Brien on 6 Jan 1861 (also in Aghada).

Henry's father was William Walsh who married Jane Hicky on 7 Sep 1838 in Aghada.

This is as far as I've got. I don't know whether William or Jane were born in Aghada .. or when they were born ... or whether they had any more children.

Patrick 48, Winifred 48, John 17, Mary 20, 3 illegible names, one pssoiblu thomas and the other Cathr, Mary, Anne and Biddy.  The ship is the Garrick and it sailed from Liverpool, 20 Jan 1848, and arrived in New York.  The source is:  Passenger Lists of Vessels Arriving at New York, New York, 1820-1897. Microfilm Publication M237, 675 rolls. Records of the U.S. Customs Service, Record Group 36. National Archives at Washington, D.C.

While I have a Patrick, family lore is wthey arrived in 1850 and his wife was Fanny.  hopefully this helps another Walsh.

I have a William Walsh born about 1800 in my family tree that I did not have any info on.  I did a bit of research and I think I have been able to match him to your Henry.  I have also found 2 children of Henry (William and Margret).  I have added all of them to my tree on Ancestry.com.  I would be happy to share my tree with you and gather additional info on Henry’s branch from you.

  • Thanks again Jeff, for opening up a new branch to the Walsh family tree.

    I'm a bit confused though re. James Walsh ca. 1765 - 1821.

The gravestone in Aghada Old Cemetery reads "erected by WILLIAM and THOMAS WALSH in Memory of their Father JAMES WALSH who Depd this Life Novr 31st 1821 Aged 56 Years".

Seems odd that not one of the other 3 brothers are included. James (who farmed Aghada Hall & Buckstown Farm), John (who farmed Ballycroneen & had son Thomas b.1837) & Richard (b.1790 & had 4 children) presumably did not contribute to the gravestone. Certainly John & Richard were still alive at the time of their father's death ...as they had children after 1821.

Perhaps John & Richard were estranged from their father. Perhaps they were away at the time of his death. I don't know. Even if John & Richard could not afford to contribute to the cost of the gravestone, it still seems odd that the two brothers would pay for a gravestone for their father & not include their brother's names.

  • Hi all - I'm a bit late to the party, but I think I am descendant from Anastasia Walsh who married Patrick Sullivan in Aghada. My ggggrandmother was Anastasia FitzGerald (nee Sullivan), daughter of Patrick Sulivan and Anstasia Walsh.

Anastasia Sulliavan married John FitzGerald and migrated to Australia in 1855 with their baby Ellen. We have quite few of us with DNA on Ancestry, My Heritage and quite few others. If anyone has any DNA up we shoud be able to compare and confirm.

Hope to hear from someone soon.
