Seking any info about family of Timothy Foley of Knockmonlea - 1876 - 1946. Born there, was later Medical Doctor at Ardmore Waterford. Lived in farm at top of hill, Knockmonlea. A brother Michael born 1860 was living in farm until he died. Believe their parents to have been Timothy Foley and possibly Anne Hickey. Other siblings - Anne (NT), Bridget, Daniel - a monk at Chilworth in UK, two nuns, Sr. Regis and Sr Louise, and Mary, (NT). Looking for info on this family generally. Also wonder if there is a local history book I could buy about the area.

Many thanks, if anyone can help.

  • Hi Emer,

If you check the 1901 Irish census at www.nationalarchives.ie you will find the family in the townland of Knockmonlea west along with a few other Foley families. The connections with the other families are unclear and possibly they are not related.

In the 1911 census one of the families are entered in Irish.

The Timothy who was the doctor in Ardmore had a daughter who  was also a doctor and married a Casey man in Dungarvan.

His 2 sisters the nuns were nuns in the St Louis convent in Monaghan. and Mary the national teacher was a teacher here in Killeagh at some stage.

Michael's wife was Kathleen from Park and they had no family.

I know Kathleens niece and if you send me your e-mail i will get her to contact you. She has some info.on the family but not as far back as you have gone but will talk to some other cousin who should know more.

We have a local history book "KIlleagh Parish through the Ages" which the historical sub-committee of the Community Council produced 2 years ago  at a cost of 15 euro. I have 2 copies left but will check to see what information of interest to you is in it.

I look forward to hearing from you. Regards for now. Anne.

  • Hi Anne,

Thank you for that very useful reply, and I would like to buy a copy of the book, if that is possible!

Is the cousin you refer to a relative of the O'Foghludha family in the 1911 census? If so, I would love to contact her, as the Risteard on that census was mentioned to me as a relative of the family at house 10, where Dr. Timothy is recorded as a medical student in 1901. I missed finding that entry because of the Irish!  So many thanks! emersingleton@gmail.com is the email. Looking forward to hearing from you again.

    Regards,

    Emer

  • Hi Emer

Came across the irelandco, com site today, and discovered your search

My name is Timothy Foley, living in Dublin,  and I am a grandson of Dr T of Ardmore

He came from the farm in Knockmonlea, and as a second son went off to earn his living elsewhere,

A few years ago the owner (another ) Timothy Foley died and the farm passed out of the direct Foley line

Please contact me and hopefully I can help you with some relevant information

    Regards

    Timothy Foley

  • Hello Timothy,

I was tryimg to find info on my father's family in Knockmonlea when I hit on this site and your comments about your grandfather Dr. Timothy Foley. My grandfather Michael was Timothy's brother and Michael's son - also Michael -  was the last of the line having no children when he died in 2001/2. i would be very interested in contacting  you as we may be able to put some missing pieces together about the family history. I also live in Dublin. Incidentally my late father Jack (aka John) spent some time (about a year I believe) with Dr. Timothy in Ardmore because he was ill as a child.

    Regards to all

  • hello Cousin Emer my great grandfather was Risteard Foley the brother of Dr. Timothy Foley who died in 1946.  their father was also Risteard Foley who married Honora Foley He was born in 1771 and died on March 11, 1855.  Risteard and Honora are buried in Clonpriest Cemetary.   I have a picture of their grave.  Risteard, the brother of Timothy, is buried in Ardagh Cemetary near Killeagh on the road to Youghal.  i have the complete information from that grave as well, although i don't know where Timothy is buried.  Timothy married Johanna Hickey (Anna).  According to the information I have Timothy died on April 18, 1946.  The farm at the top of the hill in Knockmonlea was last lived in by Edward (Ned), I believe.  Edward, now deceased, was my father's second cousin. to make it even more confusing, the first son of Risteard, the brother of Timothy, was also named Risteard.  There is a plaque to him on the national school in Kyle, as he was famous as an Irish scholar. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Risteard_Ó_Foghludha

I have lots of photos and more information.  my email is michaelofoghludha@gmail.com if you'd like to contact. (I'm in the states but still have a house in Dublin)

  • What an amazing thread to read! I am also researching a father and son, both named TIMOTHY FOLEY born late 1700's and early 1800's. The son emigrated in 1854.

I have traced the family to Whitechurch, Co Cork. Griffith's has many of our family names in Knockmonalea West but without baptism or marriage records, I cannot be sure.

I will make my own thread so I don't hijack this one, but had to comment at the lovely cooperation. :)

  • Hi,

I understand this is quite an old thread but I came across it while researching my great aunt Mary Frances O'Donnell born 16 June 1889 in Ballingarry, South Tipperary... she was the wife of Dr Tim Foley. Thanks to this thread I was able to establish the marriage and death records of both Tim and Mary.

I just wanted to add that I have some old family letters from Ardmore, dating back to the birth of Anna Frances in 1915, some from my grandfather Patrick who I think stayed with the Foley's at Ardmore at some point.

I am merely the custodian of these letter so I am very happy to share these with anyone who is researching the family, I can be contacted on PlasticPaddyAng@gmail.com.
