Want to find the home of the Downey family. We are very sure that they came from county Cork. Do not know the names of the parents of their children Dennis, Cornelius, John, Daniel and Mary who were born in the 1840s possibley late 1830 and migrated to America. Believe that near the Downey family were the MacNamara, Drennen, Daly, and Donovan families. Home is possibly Downing North: found MacNamara family in 1851 county cork census in Downing North, Dennis married Mary Donovan, Cornelius and John stayed with Tom Drennen who married Mary in America and a John Daly is found in the MacNamara census and also in Wales with Dennis and Daniel. Have 5 daughters eager to visit Ireland to see the location of their Mothers paternal ancestors and I will appreciate being able to add the Downey's Irish location for my Wife in my genealogy records. We have all of the European locations for everyone else.

  • Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in replying to your message.

Unfortunately, it may be difficult to find information without a more specific place of origin. Most Irish record sources- church records, land records, census records- are based on specific locations. Until you know a specific location within Ireland, preferably a parish or placename, it may be difficult to do anything more with these records. Have you tried searching Ancestry.com for any mention of your ancestor?s name in member family trees or messages?

Records for the corresponding Roman Catholic Parishes take in part of Fermoy beginning in 1828 and part of Kilworth beginning in 1829.

There are some places where you can search online, however these websites do not have complete collections and many do not cover the period after 1900:

www.familysearch.org has a huge database of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland.

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/ have begun a project to upload Irish church records to their site free of charge. However, so far only Counties Dublin, Kerry, Carlow and parts of Cork have been covered.

Other important sources include the Tithe Applotment Books and Griffith?s Valuation:

    Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1837): http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/index.jsp

    Griffith?s Valuation (1847-1864): http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

Some other websites that may be helpful are:

The National Archives of Ireland: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/  you can search the 1901/1911 Census on the National Archives page too

Cork Past and Present Website is very interesting: http://www.corkpastandpresent.ie/

Remember to post any new information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Best of luck with your search

  • I am the genealogist for my extended family, including my wife. Her grandmother was Bridget McNamara. She was born in 1834-35, probably in Downing North. She immigrated to the US in about 1860 (although we believe she went to Australia and New Zealand first). She married William O'Leary, also from Cork. They were early pioneers in San Francisco and Humboldt County California.
