Another thankyou to Elwyn, you have opened up a whole new door for me.  I now know that Sarah the youngest daughter of MY William Roxborough born 1840 by Elizabeth Roxborough (nee McCahon) was only 18 months old when her mother died. Wonder how I can find out the other children's names, 1891 census not too flash.

CAN anyone help with this query.  By not marrying Ellen Bradley until June 1920 does that mean the 10 children they had from 1910 till then would have taken the mothers surname.  Could not find a William Roxborough born 1910 but I found a couple of William Bradley's.

Thankyou to anyone who can assist.

Sheila (nee Roxborough).

  • Hi Sheila

Not sure if it's relevant but there is a record of a birth in Derry 1907 of a William Rossborough on www.rootsireland.ie/. There is a charge to view the full record. However the parish wasn't Aghadowey.

  • Thanks for that Col, I really appreciate your effort.  I believe I am getting it all together now, it is getting bigger than Ben Hur!  Discovered now my Dad James Roxborough was one of 15 children born to the same mother Ellen Bradley. He was the last born in 1923.  William Roxborough and Ellen Bradley were not married, they had 13 children with the surname Bradley, got married in 1920 and had 2 more including my Dad with the Roxborough surname.  The first 13 were given the Roman Catholic denomination because Ellen was one herself and my Dad and his brother Ernest were Presbyterian because their Dad was one.  Its a bit of a carry on thats for sure.  This 1920 marriage was Williams third.  He left the first in America where he went to make his fortune, then married Elizabeth McCahon who was born in 1873 (in 1873 William was already 33 years old), Elizabeth died in 1906 aged 33 leaving William with their young children and he hired Ellen to initially look after them and do his housework but then she had 15 more children to take care of! What a busy woman she was.  William my grandfather was 81 when my Dad was born!  He died in 1926 and Ellen died in 1939.  My Dad was only 15, life had its struggles and so with his brother Ernie they sailed for England.  I am returning to Aghadowey next year with my brother so should have a lot more information by then, pay my respects also.  Cheers for now and thanks aagain.  Sheila.

Hello Sheila. I am Sarah (Kaye) Roxborough, youngest daughter of Matthew Roxborough. Your cousin, to be exact.  My dad (Matt) passed away 4 years ago. Ellen Bradley had 6 girls and 5 boys and they were all brought up in the Church of Ireland, Aghadowey.  Taken by pony and trap every Sunday, they were all baptised up there according to my mother.  Willie, Ernie, Sadie(half sister), Matt, Emily are all buried up there.  Over the years I spent a lot of time with Willie, Ernie, Jane, Sadie in her later years.  Dick used to come visit from England as did Ethel and Emily.  I remember your dad coming over but I never met him as I was living away at that time. If I can help you fill in any blanks please feel free to contact me by email.
