My great grandfather was Matthew Keane, born June 1840, married to an Anne Quinlivan, ran a general store in Ennis and lived either in Ennis or Tulla, moved to New York in 1894. Their children baptised in Tulla church, records having been seen by an older relative on mine. Move to NYC dictated, according to family lore, to his position as an activist who partook of the No-Sales-to-British policy. His father was John Keane (dates uncertain) but he erected a tombstone in Tulla churchyard cemetery in memory of his father,Patrick Keane, "who departed this life Feb 20 1815 aged 60 years." John was married to Margaret MacNamara, again dates uncertain.

Interested in fleshing out this family (or these names) with any available data. Several refernces in Irish Landowners listing and property valuations show variour Keanes but there probably needs to be more data before a connection can be confirmed.

Very appreciative of any and all data you might be able to seek out. Thank you in advance.

  • Dear Thomas:

Many thanks for your message to Ireland Reaching Out.

If you would like to view the Tulla  graveyard, you can do so through www.historicgraves.com.  Tulla is listed and you should find the headstone that you refer to.

In addition, I will have a look at the parish registers for you and let you know what I find in the next week or so.

You might email me with further information at tulla@irelandxo.com.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.
